Works with Place Names in the Title (collection)

does “Down South” count as a place? i know south is technically just an adjective but in this case it is referring to “the south”, a real region of the united states that you can point to on a map.

i’ve added it for now

oh! also “God’s Country” is referring to the united states. it is technically not an adjective, but it is a common phrase used by patriotic americans. i can point to it on a map… but the map probably wouldn’t say “god’s country”.

To avoid confusion, this title translates as ‘Drummer in Rio’.
Sleepers did a bunch of songs related to places, most works are not present in DB yet but I mean to add them bit by bit. Plus I think I could add quite some more from other artists.

Somewhat related- Do we have a collection for artists with places as a name or in their name? Like Boston, Chicago, America, Europe, Asia, etc.

dont think we do yet

We do now! Collection “Artists with Place Names in the Name” - MusicBrainz

I guess it could be easily over-filled with searching for places and just adding them (e.g. there are 5 ‘Europe’ artists), but I’m just adding ones I actually know/encounter.

Hmm, should this include orchestras? Most are named for their location (Oregon Symphony, Berlin Philharmonic, etc.).

Already some questionable entries. “AKB48?”

According to Wikipedia they are named after an area in Tokyo, AKB48 - Wikipedia.

Good question regarding the orchestras. I didn’t consider many edge cases and should have realized due to the length of the other collection’s description that there would be many. I just started putting together a list on my own and figured a collection would be fun

Ah, thanks. Not meaning to be picky.

And so it is. It actually surprised me to find how few such artists appear in my own collection.

AKB stands for Akiba, which stands for Akihabara, which is a Tokyo district.

Went through my own added works and found a bunch

Cool project, I really like the idea of being able to visualize these works on a map at some point. Do we have a way to keep track of the association between the work and the place? For some of these works the association is not obvious (for example when it’s abbreviated). Also, what about places referred to by nickname, like Big Apple?

My own contribution:

Does Disneyland count? It’s not specified which one.
And if we’re collecting multiple types of entities we could start tagging them too, like “genre in name” (that way they can be searched and filtered )

from what I hear, if you can point to it on a map, it counts (I think it also includes places not on earth, and perhaps the earth as a whole? not sure on these two points tho)
