With the CAA outage, I wonder if it would be a good idea (if feasible) to temporarily disable the ability to add/remove/edit cover art, just until CAA is back online. I’m seeing a lot of edits where (usually beginner) editors are removing, or adding, art because they think that will fix the ‘unavailable’ problem.
I’m thinking there could be a mess to clean up if much of this gets past voting.
It would be nice to be able to disable this easily, but I don’t think there is. Luckily it doesn’t seem like too much of a problem, the following edit searches aren’t too busy (or have I missed some other cover art edit types?)
Note: Everyone, please keep in mind that it’s not helpful to jump in with a huge pile of no votes (it only needs a few to stop the edit passing) - and they only need one comment telling them that the CAA is down, let’s be nice and make sure to encourage inexperienced editors
I’ll be more blunt: That seems like a waste of developer time, considering we have had a total of 4 cover art removal edits, 2 cover art change edits, and 0 cover art additions since the 17th.
The DDoS attack occurred on the 9th, so there has been time for additions and removals to have gotten through the voting period with nobody being able to lay eyes on them. But I agree, if it’s really that few, and there is significant effort involved in disabling the feature, it may not be worth it. It just seemed like I was seeing more than that. If it were as simple as flipping a switch, it might still be worth it.
I was also surprised that there were so few, when I looked.
There are substantially more of each edit before the 17th - I’m not sure why. Did people just get used to the missing artwork, or is that when the news item banner was added? I’m also not sure how people were adding artwork edits in that timeframe ¯_(ツ)_/¯
These were the closing dates of the edits, that is the last edits were actually entered on the 10th and obviously did not receive enough votes to close earlier than 7 days later. No wonder, it is hard to form an opinion on cover art edits (except removals) with images you can’t see
I believe this extended outage is to prevent it. As they tried to bring things back up without much change and it immediately went down again as the attackers resumed their DDoS work!
When I go to add artwork, the message below is displayed:
" Warning : The Internet Archive is currently experiencing difficulties. Adding images is unlikely to work at the moment."
Of course, I tried to add some!
It might be better to say clearly… “It won’t work!”
I believe thats a standard message, we’ve never experienced such a prolonged outage before so that message makes sense because in the past Internet Archive has been offline for a few hours tops. Sometimes it can also appear if the Internert Archive is overloaded, so in theory you could be lucky during those scenarios and have something be succesfully uploaded!
A lot of people are upset that its offline, but it will be back eventually - just need to give it time; however there is another thread about working on a contingency plan in case this occurs again.
understood… i commented earlier.
The discussion was about newbies making edits. The message could be clearer in my view… eventual consistency may happen, but it would be better to set expectations. That’s all.
To be honest the team are always welcoming of improvements to wording to make things clearer - we were quite successful in having the cover art addition page text changed to make it clear that we don’t accept fan art work
