SampleBrainz: browse music sample connections

I’ve published a website for exploring music samples from the MusicBrainz database. I’m awaiting an email response from MetaBrainz about the name, so it could change. But for now you can see it at https://samplebrainz.com/ with source code at GitHub - AndrewBelt/SampleBrainz: Browse music sample connections from the MusicBrainz database

My goal is to encourage more people to add more sample relations to MusicBrainz, so I might add a quick-edit interface to add sample connections right on the song page.

Let me know if you have any suggestions for this project.

On the homepage, I discovered a sample I didn’t know on a track I know well. Interesting!
It could be nice to be able to filter by (owned) release collection.

Sorry to ask, but what exactly do you mean by “sample”?

Example #1:

Ahhh, could it be that you mean who has “reused” (sampled) the song?
Example #2

Something as Madonna has sampled ABBA’s “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” in her “Hung Up” Song?

Exactly. A sample is a portion of a recording that’s been copied and reused in a new song. It’s the foundation of hip hop, electronic, pop, and other genres.

Some popular songs that have sampled others are

Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla IceUnder Pressure by Queen

Bitter Sweet Symphony by The VerveThe Last Time by The Andrew Oldham Orchestra / The Rolling Stones

U Can’t Touch This by MC HammerSuper Freak by Rick James

Some are much more subtle:

Promising project but I’m missing the “samples IMDb” and “contains samples by” relationships.

This might get rejected but… What about covers of works / Music quoting? They fit the same vibes as samples. It’s not outright taking the recording, but still taking the melody

I love this!

Certainly with people concerned for the future of WhoSampled.com

MusicBrainz only has these recording-to-recording relationship types. To simplify them, I’ve now combined them into “Samples” (sample material, mash-ups, DJ mixes), “Remixes”, and “Other versions” (instrumental, karaoke, a cappella).

I’d love to add covers, interpolations, lyrical quotations, and especially timestamps of first appearance of each sample, but this would require either new tables/columns in MusicBrainz’ database, or supplemental tables in SampleBrainz’ own database.
