[mailed in] Last week I did the usual, kept an eye on socials, did some ticket creating etc.
I also made some EAA logos (spoiler: they are just the CAA logo with different text)
And I spent a few hours mocking LB app user pages for pranav. Mobile users with opinions on UX, your feedback is welcome: Figma
Which reminds me - If any GSoC students need mockups from me, or need designs signed off, don’t wait too long. I’m not a mentor so I don’t know your timelines. You need to brief me, with a few days to spare in case I am busy!
And a LB entity search mockup for ansh: Figma + Figma
Finally, I got that new part-time permanent contract! Starting in two weeks I will be the communications and marketing officer for FIRST Union.
It means I will stop taking on big freelance projects, and my time will be more predictable. Which means I will be able to be more consistent with my work for MetaBrainz - knock on wood.

[mailed in] Last week MonkeyPython visited Brussels, and we spent some time setting up his new laptop in a cat-filled AirBnB, plus visited the instrument museum.
Other than that, I started updating very old and untouched dependencies of MBS, tested the EAA a bit and added icons to events with art.
Additionally I advanced the conversation in [this thread] to the next step - what’s the release date of video releases. Opinions welcome!
Finally, the usual genre adding, vandal banning, support supporting and whatnot.

[mailed in] [ericd] Last week mostly played around with feed generation in Python with my feed reader. Found that Payoneer blocked me for not using Gmail during registration and luckily I fixed it : )

[mailed in] Nothing much from me from last week! I’ve been very busy with exams, but I’ve only got three more to go this week!
After that, I’ll work on setting up a local mock for testing sending emails

Last week I reviewed PRs and helped bitmap with the Event Art Archive (currently in beta).
With atj we prepared switching search on beta.mb.o to the SolrCloud 9 instance (hopefully soon).
With lucifer and mayhem we organized a video meeting with all the GSoC contributors and mentors: [blog post] (nice to see you all)
Also worked on SIR testing and Solr 9.6 update, upgraded the wiki server to Noble, plus some support and tickets triage.

Last week I continued testing and tweaking the new Solr cluster. I configured ZooKeeper ACLs, wrote some scripts to try and balance leaders across the nodes in the cluster, improved the Ansible role and started working on documentation.
I also worked with yvanzo to prepare the cluster for use as the search provider on beta.
and bootstrapped the new Matrix server, and assisted lucifer in setting up Borg backups.

last week, i worked on setting up chatbrainz, participated in the gsoc intro meeting, worked on existing LB PRs to fix dump issues, and speedup imports in spark.
also worked on exploring setting up spark cluster with ansible and some misc LB bugs.

[mayhem] Annoying week, dealing with lots of stupid stuff. like Hetzer abuse BS – more on that during that topic meeting.
I worked a bit on JSPF cleanup, since we identified a few ways in which we didn’t meet the spec.
Had two conference calls, one with researchers who are investigating the fairness of recommendation engines and they are
interesting in working on that with us – which is quite interesting. The other call was the GSoC welcome meeting which is all around lovely.
This week I’ve got lots of small stuff to look after and then I can finally dig back into LB Local.

last week was mostly code review for picard, and looking over new tickets.

Last week was more dealing with feedback for Harmony and working on smaller improvements.
I was also revisiting my dark theme userstyle for MB to fix a few small regressions and resolve confusion around its ambiguous old name (new name: Dark Side of MusicBrainz).
And I finally got back into BB development, updated my local dev server and found a solution to get Elasticsearch working
Its container was always immediately crashing on my machine with no helpful error for over a year (before I had disabled it), and today I finally got a useful output and fixed the issue by limiting the number of open files of the container.
I’ve also investigated [BB-803: Author credit with multiple authors is displayed in random order], but unfortunately could not reproduce it locally so far.

last week I mainly did a lot of work getting the Event Art Archive deployed onto beta
it was barely announced yet (except on IRC), but there are already a lot of additions, which is very cool: [edit search]
(those images may not load later due to the DDoS attack against the IA)
ater I finished the MB read-only connector PR and deployed that to beta, too (so it’s using the standby for more queries now)
also worked on some autocomplete issues over the weekend, MBS-13598 and MBS-13604

last week I continued on Picard cleanup & refactoring
I also did usual supervision, system upgrades, user support, etc.
Last night & today, I worked on a serious issue with our SOLR cluster, it should be fixed now (replaced a VM).

Last week was about getting back to things. I was going through our open bugs and prioritizing things
Not much other than that. Looking forward to the coding period for gsoc!

Last week, I finally completed my college exams and came back to Delhi for my summer break.
I worked mainly on reviewing PRs related to migrating from class components to functional components.
And made final touches to BrainzPlayer SPA feature.
Then I worked on caching user stats API calls, and refactoring them. And participated in the GSoC intro meet.

NOthing much from my side, as I was onyl checking documentations for troi, setting my dev env and etc.
Talked with lucifer to how to start my project, so Im planning to start working on it on this week

I have again started working on BB tickets again since last week
And some bad news from my side guys: I thought I will be free this whole summer but I got a paid internship… I guess i’ll have to work now

it does what it’s supposed to do rn
have started working on the the next part, the archival one.

[MonkeyPython] infact, I’m here on a DIFFERENT machine!
the fabled new machine which is called Lemon !
so now I’m working on moving everything over, accustomating it so it works the way I want, it’s a slow job, but that’s fine, because then it works to get used to it!
Last week I was drumwhirl in Brussels! I visited reosarevok and and we also worked on setting up the machine so I can start working with it, not just on it.
We also visited an instrument museum: photo
That was fun!
For now and the next coming weeks I’m going to take a little break but soon I will be back to work on instruments and books! yaay!

Hetzner abuse

[mayhem] so, whenever users complain about our services they can contact hetzner and mail abuse@hetzer.com (I hope they’ll enjoy some more spam because of this).
but hetzner abuse has become… abusive.
I ended up having a long conversation loaded with threats about shutting off our service if we didn’t given in to the brain damaged requests that this person was making.
eventually they get fed up and escalated it to legal, which i was very happy with.
because that was the last I heard of it. I hope legal will train this muppet a bit more
but, what I am getting as it this: we don’t make it very clear that we have no music on our site.

I’ve put it in BOLD a nubmer of times, but someone keeps editing it back.

Discussion ensues re. making a separate page, with a few comments that it wont get read anyway. @rob will work on the page, to have something crystal clear to point to - even if those people don’t read it in time.

Summit: e-visas and Taj planning

almost all of the attendess will need an e-visa to come to india for the summit.
less than 120 days left to the summit, so everyone can start working on their applications.

Is it about the “artists” with one of the most entries as of 2024? The ones that were apparently also sending DMCA take down notices to Spotify for their own music? They also went after the Internet Archive to remove cover art they uploaded themselves…
