Reviews
[mailed in, presumably paraphrased by reo] akshaaatt basically bragged a bit about being in Japan and meeting fancy computer people and seems to be having a lot of fun
Also he let us know the LB app has now been downloaded over 1 thousand times

[mayhem] last week was working on code with monkey on the entity pages, cleaned a few things up, but I still had to pass it to lucifer to finish off. still loads that needs doing.
I also started working on the mosaic image.
and I finally managed to get amazon and spotify to update out banking details. hopefully that means that some $28k are headed towards our bank account before the year is out.
and there was, of course, the ususal MeB background stuff.. the boring stuff.

Last week I worked a bit with bitmap to merge a bunch of small old PRs and get the number of open ones under 100
Which does sound like a crazy amount still (and it is!) but it’s a lot less than it has been in the past
So, yay
I also worked with yvanzo to improve and add context to a ton of strings which I think is finally ready(ish) now
Which should make the life of translators easier and better, after a short period of making it annoying : D
Other than that, I finished work (hopefully) on fixing a 10 year (or more) old bug where half our email preferences did absolutely nothing at all and also people could opt out of getting info about notes on their own edits. whoops.
And I put up a few instrument images with ApeKattQuest

[ApeKattQuest] sorry a lot happened RL last week so I haven’t really had time to much instruments
(birthday, faffing with legal entities, old phone battery is is dead so getting a new phone, getting specs for new computer, research Things™, A lot of SNOW, etc, arararara)
I did however, manage to do ]INST-1087: xeremies] today, working on the other one now
but this week will be juleforberedelser so don’t expect to see much of me. : D
Last week I mainly worked on the year in music and the entity pages features for LB
Both are getting close to completion which feels quite nice
I also reviewed some feature PRs from ansh , it’s a pleasure!
That was the main bits for me!
Today I was preparing to head out to France to see the family for a week, so I’ll be AFK but will check messages for urgent business

[ansh] Last week, I majorly worked on the Artist Similarity Graph PR. I refactored quite a good amount of existing code.
Created a few endpoints to fetch the relevant data to have a visually appealing page, with dynamic colours.
Other than that, I made some changes to the Fresh Releases PR to make some components easily reusable.
Couldn’t work much as I have my exams running.
A bit more all over the place last week than usual, a lot of touching on small tickets, discussion
A few social media ang blog posts
Met with yvanzo to make a introduction to weblate video and text walkthrough, let’s see if we can entice some new translators when we launch translations.metabrainz
Made a sad LB change [LB-1381: replace “Top Similar Users” image]
Otherwise too much touching to list
Over the weekend I finally started to reorganize the provider classes of my Harmony seeder to make it less painful to add features which require access to the internal state of release lookups.
Of course it was painful to convince TypeScript that the new structure with two abstract class hierarchies with generics that have to know about each other is valid code
Otherwise not much, only the usual MB editing and voting.

Mainly worked on the search indexer, reviewed/completed a few MBS PRs, mainly the PR on translation’s context (which reosarevok mentioned).
Had two friendly calls with aerozol about MB docs and translations (which he mentioned too).
Plus the usual Jira maintenance, search indexer, support, tickets triage…
Last, I’m reminding all the potential GSoC 24 mentors to please write and develop the ideas that have been proposed during the last summit.
Here is the short list from summit notes: [GSoC 2024 ideas shortlist]
And the page for writing developed ideas: [GSoC 2024 developed ideas]
Having those ready will allow us to publicize these through a blog post and our other channels.
(Only 2 among 10 are ready at the moment. Hoping for more than zero answers this time.)

last week I spent time fixing bugs and test failures in the artist credit editor refactor - [pull 3113] - which will help move the rest of our edit pages to react
also spent a lot of time testing/reviewing old PRs, to reduce the open PR count, as reosarevok mentioned

[jasje] I’ve been going through shitty exams
also this month marks my 1 year anniversary (ig?) with Metabrainz yay

[Pratha-Fish] I don’t have exams
but I don’t have a laptop either :skull:
MFs have taken so far 1 month for the repairs and it’s still going strong
But looking forward to (dying to) getting back to work soon : D
Hopefully should have something to work with next week if not this one
Apart from that uhhh
petted a cow
last week, I worked on updating various stats for YIM 2023. I also migrated the playlists generation code to spark.
Other than misc updates around LB, to improve cover art coverage and linking of each individual artist in the artist credits. and worked on some other bug fixes.

OSS Donations
The idea of giving back to smaller open source projects that our projects are using has been up in the air for at least 4 years now.
It has been almost implemented in 2022 on the initiative of mayhem but has been withdrawn due to the financial incertitudes.
At the last summit we agreed on finally starting with a smaller amount than initially planned, but at least to start donating.
Here is a trimmed version of the 2022 list: [google doc]
I have had no answer since last week, but last minute propositions can still be made now.

Moving docs to ReadTheDocs

Related ticket: MBS-13395: Move documentation from the wiki to ReadTheDocs
Link to @rdswift’s existing migration work: [github] [ReadTheDocs site]
[mayhem] rdswift coverted some 80hours worth of our docs into a read the docs site.
I personally felt that this would be a waste of great effort that has turned out quite good.
so, I would like to propose two things:

  1. that we have a docsprint week again in January.
  2. that this become a community wide project to take this on and see if we can get it mostly done during that week.
    thoughts on these ideas?
Points that were discussed:
Is the wiki going away?
No, it will still be used for wiki-appropriate things, like user-written guides
The migration work should be more targeted.
It was discussed in a meeting with aerozol and yvanzo that some things are better early candidates for moving to the docs, the discussion will be added to the ticket.
Is reo happy to work on linking up new docs with MB in Jan?
Yup!

It was agreed to talk about it closer to the docsprint week, which is mid Jan 2024, or in the ticket in the meantime.
