Marking release as a different version of another

I have a cd version of a digital release, and when filling out the details, I marked it as a duplicate of the digital - but for some reason it didn’t take. They are not the same, so I don’t want to merge them, and the digital version said it can’t take cd stubs. How can I say that these are two different versions of the same release?

the digital version: Release “Echoes of Nature: Killer Whales” by [nature sounds] - MusicBrainz
the cd version: Release “Echoes of Nature: Killer Whales” by [nature sounds] - MusicBrainz

I’ve also looked at this topic: Add a different version of an existing release but I’ve already added the release.

Both releases should be in the same release group. A release group, as the name suggests, groups different versions of one release.

In this specific case the two separate release groups should be merged.

Thank you for clarifying - I kept seeing the merge for individual releases, not the release groups. Hopefully I did it right.
