Every time I log in or create some account that’s related to my name, I keep getting this box just because I’m trying to be specific about instrument gear and correct a bunch of edits. I’m just trying to help out and be specific.
Hello Ian! You were banned because you entered unsourced edits without proper explanation, sometimes against our community guidelines. And you keep making new accounts to avoid the ban.
MusicBrainz is a lovely and warm community and I think you could still be welcome to contribute - ultimately this would be up to the community leader, not me. I think you would have to agree to stop adding things based on dubious data from KORD and from listening by ear (at least until you have earned back some community confidence).
But don’t worry, there are millions of other things to edit, from reliable sources, to keep busy with!
If you love music and want to contribute, then I’m sure lots of the community members here could share some of the editing projects they are working on - there are some interesting things on our reports page, for instance.
But you really have to keep in mind that MusicBrainz is a community website. You have to take it slowly to start with, and talk to other editors - sometimes before making a lot of changes.
I am happy to chat with you on Discord if you would like some support regarding what’s acceptable to enter into the MB database, and what the community expectations are
Serial ban evader who has also been banned by Wikipedia for unsourced edits. Also self-replies using multiple accounts. Hilariously, he’s asked this question before and also liked his own post with this sock puppet account.
You see, I would love to, but I don’t even have a discord. I’d rather just chat here instead. Also, I was new to the site four months ago. Either I’m probably kind of shy to explain my edits or I just didn’t want to put them in. And for the sources, you want to know why? The problem is I keep forgetting and I figured you’d be surprised at the fact that you didn’t know. And for various accounts, I’m not mad, though, I mean, I’m just disappointed and tired of being banned on every contribution site ever since I was on Genius.com in December. Never got verified. I was just trying to do my job and put in the following musician and their roles for every specific instrument type, even though I miss a step. Truly, I didn’t know I was the cause of the violation, so I was wondering if we could work with each other. Would that work for you?
I am happy to chat here Ian
If you want to have a less public chat let me know.
Sorry to hear that you’ve been banned on so many sites. It might be a similar situation like has happened on MusicBrainz, where you have to do things a certain way so that other people know what’s going on - even if you are sure you are right.
I would have to talk to @reosarevok about it still, but perhaps there is a different fun task that you could do. Super easy, but useful, would be going through a report like “missing language” and adding the language, if you know it: link.
If you mainly like adding instrument credits, there are releases that have booklets uploaded, that need the credits copied into the relationships. For instance this one: link. Would that be of interest to you?
Do you understand that because KORD has been wrong a lot we can’t let you blindly add credits from there, and we also can’t let you add credits/instruments etc based on your opinion, until you have built up trust?
Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. Speaking of which, KORD’s currently working on the song and artists pages and it seems to have shut down temporarily, except for the backstage stories. I’ll be able to make something out of this in my head. And yes, I understand and my trustworthiness has been fully built. I’m well aware of what’s going on around me, as long as I keep my current imsings_ account and not the other ones I’ve deleted so far.
I’m not sure you’ve understood me correctly Ian - you have at times added incorrect KORD cord credits, so the community does not want you to add credits from KORD anymore. The same goes for working out credits in your head. You did not listen to this concern, which is one of the reasons you were banned.
To contribute you have to work from a better source, like booklets, or try a less complicated task (for now).
I don’t even know what KORD is, do you link your references in your edits?
I can’t find your user names, to check your edit history, sorry.
KORD is a stem and multitrack website and app, only allowed for Apple. It’s currently having difficulties right now. At least they left the backstage stories.
The sources are what I understand and can refer to, too, but look, I’m trying my best to keep it all under control. As a high-functioning autistic teenager, I’m just trying to help, but just to be clear, in my little mind, you’d probably think it’s not helping. I have to make sure what type of instrument the artist is playing, not just “keyboards,” as I can hear clearly from the multitrack stems, otherwise I won’t know who played on the tracks anymore. I’m smarter than you think, and it’s the truth.
I understand that Ian. Nobody is saying that you’re not smart, or that you can’t hear certain instruments.
The thing is that here you are contributing to a community database, so it’s important that other people can confirm what you are adding. Even if you are absolutely sure that you are right.
I’m sure that this was the issue you faced at Genius and Wikipedia as well - all of these community-edited sites are very different to keeping your own lists, where you don’t have to worry about other people checking your sources.
Can you think of any information that you would like to contribute to MusicBrainz, where you can always paste in a link that other users can use to check the accuracy? (not KORD, for now)
@jesus2099: KORD actually looks pretty cool (playkord.com is still down atm). But at least some of the data from there has conflicted with release booklet credits, for instance.
Maybe AllMusic, because Stars Go Dim and others need a LOT of data, according to Apple Music. Out of curiosity, I actually have one more problem. There’s been an error on Metric’s “Combat Baby,” because I might’ve accidentally submitted the edit before I was gonna put in James Shaw, because he was the guitarist (mostly the role electric guitar on track 4). Would you consider fixing that for me?
AllMusic could be a better source - you know that existing information in MusicBrainz, taken from booklets, could still be more accurate than AllMusic, Kord, etc? We often have less data, but it’s much more human-curated.
Just confirming that this is the credit that should be changed to James Shaw?
On the track “Combat Baby”:
