How should I organize music like this? I have some artists that do a lot of “Covers” but I don’t know how to organize them by album since they don’t have there own albums. So what I thought about do is a few artists like this “Nathan Wagner” and albums like this “Pop Covers - Nathan Wagner”. “Rock Covers - Nathan Wagner” and then for is own music I would do a album called “Nathan Wagner”. This way all the covers are organized by Genre or based on his “Playlists from YouTube”. Playlist titles are “just a bit of my story (Epic Originals)”, “Nathan Wagner - Pop Originals”, “Nathan Wagner - Rock Originals”, “Nathan Wagner Covers”, “Nathan Wagner Playlist”. But in his Playlist there are a few covers I think. So I was just thinking about using his playlists as album titles since he dose not have actual albums as fat as I can tell. Otherwise I don’t know how to organize these files. Same way with STATE of MINE artist. These kind of groups and artists are harder to organize. Dose anyone have any ideas of what I can do to organize them.
https://www.youtube.com/@nathanwagner762/playlists are the playlists that you’re looking at, right? Does he add new songs to the existing playlists as time goes on?
I don’t know how to do what you asked, but I do have a solution. Those videos does seems like individual releases to me, and could be added as a youtube only release
Yes these songs are from YouTube and I don’t know how often the playlists are updated. I pretty much only want to name the files correctly and organize them by album. Even if there are no albums I would still like to rename them and organize them some how. Even if I need to make them into a album and use them as a playlist on my Musicolet app. I don’t use apps that can update the songs or anything like that I rename the songs and stuff with musicbrainz but for artists like these I don’t know how to make albums or how to organize the music. Should I just make a folder named “Nathan Wagner” and have the mp3s all in the same folder.
For your local playlists, you should do whatever’s most convenient for the way that you plan to listen to the music! The approach that you described in your first post (grouping by covers and genres) seems reasonable and is probably similar to what I’d do in the same situation.
If you’re asking about how these should be added to the MusicBrainz database, that’s a bit trickier. I think that the consensus is that playlists usually shouldn’t be added as releases:
One good option would be adding each video as a single like @RustyNova suggested. I think it can be okay to add a YouTube playlist as a release in narrow cases, like if all the songs were uploaded at once and it’s really intended to function as an album. I’d avoid doing that for a playlist that functions more as a collection, where songs are being added over time, though.
correct, playlists like this shouldn’t be added as releases, nor should albums that don’t actually exist (physically or digitally)
the videos can be added to MusicBrainz as releases (tho what the release group types should be used is currently under discussion)
as to how to get album names for your own collection, that could likely be achieved with a taggerscript (tho might depend on the releases having some key details if you want to automate it a bit). I could try and help you write one up, if you’d like, or if you’d like to work it out yourself, it’s under Options
→ Scripting
, and there’s a basic guide there to help you work it out~ (and more in the Picard docs)
a few pointers if you wanna take a crack at it, the checkbox next to the script name in the list is whether you want the script to automatically run or not (they can be manually run from the context menu, so it’s your choice). also, I’d probably use an $if2()
function, so that if multiple things are true, it only sets the album title once (like a rock cover, for instance)
Going with single should be fine enough.
I think the easiest thing for me to do would be keeping the playlists from YouTube as the same name as the playlists for the Artists. And then just clean up the Titles/File Names and just find a really nice image that would work as coverart for all the mp3s from that artists since there is no Album art. I think this will be the best option since I have been fixing my Artists and Albums and getting corrected Album art and titles and Genres and even years of release. So this will be the only option for not having albums.
There is! A YT thumbnail count as a cover art if it’s a YT release only
