Track Ordering Changing over time

ugh, this is what I get for getting involved in digital media releases.

OK so this “EP” has been added to the database at some point with a tracklist in one way:

https://beta.musicbrainz.org/release/59870744-fe3c-4c7b-a99c-e23dce7ec386

However as you can probably see if you follow the Spotify link, it now has a different track list.

Going by the edit notes it looks like the artist also kept adding tracks to this EP over time.

Do we care to keep this up to date, or shall we just leave it as is?

I think the right way to do this would be to mark the spotify link as ended with the date in which it was updated (if that’s known), mark the release as withdrawn, and add the new version separately. An annotation on the release group could also help.

It’s definitely annoying but some artists just like doing that, I only know of Kanye doing that back in the day with TLOP, but now it’s much easier for artists to continuously update releases, especially if the release is on an easily accessible platform like bandcamp or soundcloud.

I’ve personally stopped listening to Fred again’s music for this very reason lol, his release USB is fkn horrible to keep track of, especially if you like collecting / downloading the music.

These are actually different releases:

  1. 2 tracks
  2. 3 tracks
  3. 4 tracks

It seems it was re-released with extra tracks between March and July 2024. Someone added the 3-track release and then another editor mistakenly added the 4th track and changed the Spotify URL, which @chaban has since fixed. They should all (and now do) have separate MB releases.

The industry jargon for this is “waterfall release”.
