Me on Tom Lehrer again. This rabbit hole gets deeper and deeper.
As I started adding his works that aren’t in the database yet (because I was looking for some fairly mindless update to do, lol), I stumbled on this: The Physical Revue, by Tom Lehrer
It’s a whole bunch of documentation and parts of a recording of a performance from 1951. I’ve already added the first piece as a standalone recording, but then I thought, there really needs to be a way to tie this all together. If all the parts were there, I would definitely call it a release, although maybe “other” rather than album.
It is numbered, and released in a single place. So it is a Release in its own way. Not just stand alone recordings. I’d use the title of the page as the Release title.
Other seems logical, but I’d also tick “live” as it is from a show.
You can also do a “download for free” link.
I’d also stick to the original track numbers on that page. And add an annotation to list the rest.
I’m tempted to create recordings for the whole thing. They exist and all the details are there (except length), even though not all of them can be downloaded. I wish there were a way to mark specific tracks as “data only” or something. Maybe label the tracks and put a disambig on the recordings?
Should I also add a “soundtrack” type? Technically this would be the 1951 original cast!
I agree with you… and had put it in my reply, but then editied.
The intent of that page is to release the whole 19 tracks. Just copyright stopped them. Maybe add two releases. One with just the partial track list as available (using those track numbers) and one as pseudo-release with the other tracks linked into the copyright recordings.
I’d add, that in addition to potentially making recordings/release/collection-of-recordings for this, it’s absolutely appropriate to make an event entry for this event.
I’d go so far as to say there should be an event entry for this, but I don’t think there’s any reason that the person creating the recordings/release/collection-of-recordings should be required or obligated to create it.
If, at some point in the future, I notice that it hasn’t been done yet, I’d probably create the event entry myself.
It looks like there are three events, in fact. The recordings are from the second one but we have date and performer info for the other two as well. Once I add artists for the recordings, adding the event should be pretty easy.
Aha! I hadn’t gotten that far in his work list, lol. And yet it’s filed under “music not by Tom Lehrer.” I wonder if that was confusion by the person making the web page.
yea, I believe it must be a mistake, as the both the lyrics pdf for s = ½ gt² & the sheet for Te Amo state the music is by Tom Lehrer.
[edit] actually:
Home > music not by Tom Lehrer > from The Physical Revue
I think because “The Physical Revue” is categorised as “music not by Tom Lehrer” anything that is also part of that is automatically categorised the same.
There’s some other inconsistencies in there. Relativity is tagged as not by Tom, but then there’s a note that says it is by Tom, and then the document itself says it’s not. So I figure go with the source document.
