The work Can You Feel the Love Tonight is used for both the movie version (The Lion King) and Elton Johns solo version. Since they don’t have the same lyrics, I think they should have two separate works.
There are 168 recordings that uses this work, there is a long list of work IDs and also a bunch of related works (translated versions, medleys etc).
Do you have any recommendations for how to split this work without causing too much damage?
Also, which version would you consider primary? E.g. which should be linked to instrumental recordings?

How different are the lyrics?
The only common lyrics is ”can you feel the love tonight”…

Okay, that does sound like a different work!
Instrumental versions I’d keep on the oldest one, personally.
There’s no great way of splitting a work like this - just create the second work, link as version of the first I guess? And then start moving things over that you are sure belong there. Some might never be possible to know with certainty, you could always have a third version with a disambiguation such as “unspecified version” and move those there.

The “oldest one” is the only one. The question is, should the newly created work be for the movie or the solo? Maybe I can determine from context which version is most common.
As long as I can listen to the instrumental versions I can probably determine which one it should be for each. There is a very distinct intro in the solo version.
My point was I’d probably keep the existing work for the first one released, and then add a new one for the second one. But if you can figure out in advance which is more common, that would work too.

Ah, I see. In this case they were both released at the same time as part of the soundtrack to The Lion King.
After listening to some recordings and looking at the track lengths, I’d say almost all of them should be the solo version. I’ll let that one be the existing work and create a new for the dramatic version.

This is a trick I have used before when splitting up recordings that had been mushed together. Going from one to three versions: Unknown, Version 1, Version 2.
The advantage of that is you also know where you have got up to with checking versions.
Nice waffley annotations that explain how to spot the difference would be helpful.
