i just started adding missing disc IDs from my cd collection and i want to fix the track lengths for their respective releases but i’ve noticed the suggested times from the toc and the times shown when i load the cd with a music player are often a bit off, usually by 1 but sometimes 2 seconds (vs bigger differences between the current track lengths on musicbrainz and the toc or music player). i’m guessing this is mostly just a difference in how they round, but which would be better for adding to the database?
Use the “Set Track Times” as you see next to the disc ID. It then sets track times accurate to 1000th’s of a second. There is a script that then lets you see this accuracy that is actually stored in the database.
Different CD players will round up\down. TOC is more accurate.
Inline stuff is the one that adds that detail

okay, that makes sense. thank you!
that part i don’t quite understand. do you mean this is where the TOC info comes from?
If you have the CD, or a rip log from something like EAC, you have a TOC you can submit through Picard. It then is attached to the specific release.
When initially added there is often a “Set Track Lengths” link here to allow you to fully submit the exact TOC to the Release.
This is the most accurate way you can submit track lengths. Just be careful to match accurately your release to actual release year, country and manufacturer of the CD. Not all CDs are built the same. Reissues may change slightly.
okay yeah, that’s what i was doing but definitely finding i have to be careful about the release especially with albums that initially have multiple versions. i’ve already found 2 in my collection where the barcode and catalog number don’t match ![]()
It is not unusual that you have a different edition with the same Disc ID. In this case, you should add your different edition (release) to MB, with its Disc ID, in the same release group.
1 was actually a version that’s already in MB, they just literally put the wrong cd in the album haha (the color for the cds are the same but the catalog and barcode numbers are different, the cd in my album matches the catalog for the other version. the only difference being the packaging, not the tracks themselves). i’m not sure if the disc id would be the same for the 2 versions as i only have one, so to be safe i’m going to add it to the one that matches the cd
the other one (lovelyz8 by lovelyz) already has a disc id in MB which matches my cd and the packaging has the same barcode and catalog number as on MB and everywhere else online, and the cd has the right image and tracks, but for some reason the catalog number printed on it belongs to an entirely different album from them (hi~, a repackage of girls’ invasion) which is only connected by being from the same artist and company. i’m assuming this one is just a weird misprint, i don’t know if it affect’s anyone else’s albums ![]()
sorry if none of this makes sense i’m not generally good at describing things
Forgive my offtopic reply, but since you share similar taste in music with me: make sure you check out MusicBrainz sister site https://listenbrainz.org/ ![]()
If anything changes (including misprints), it’s a different release in MB.
When buying CDs second hand this does sometimes happen. I have a Garbage album like that with clearly the wrong CD in the box. A Canadian CD in a GB case. In that example it is the manufacturing details in the inner matrix ring that can nail the actual CD down. Sometimes needing to check Discogs for more specifics in that area.
In that situation it means the CD+case I own matches two different releases. I tagged with the Canadian details as that was more “correct” for the physical audio media. As I knew this was clearly a second hand error I did not add it as a separate release.
For a popular artist it is often worth checking at Discogs for a match as they tend to have a lot more versions of releases. It is common for some releases to be made in multiple factories, or small changes to booklets. Reissues with new cat no and barcode combos. Or different cat nos on the spine. This is when you would add a new release.
hmm in that case should i add the lovelyz8 album with the same catalog number on the cd as hi~ as a separate lovelyz8 release?
these were both bought brand new wrapped though ![]()
now that makes me wonder if in my first example the cds themselves actually have different catalog numbers or if they printed them all with one and split them between the two album versions. to be specific this is memeM by purple kiss, which comes in the meme version (barcode 8804775251047 and catalog number L200002373, this catalog number matches my cd) and the m version (barcode 8804775251054 and catalog number L200002374, which matches the packaging for my album)
i might be able to find out by posting on r/kpophelp to ask anyone else who has the same album (bought new) and see if anyone actually has a cd with catalog number end in 4 instead of 3
Same catalogue number but different packaging => different release, indeed.
I’ve seen several times deluxe edition with its catalogue number on the packaging including the exact same CD1 as the standard edition, with regular edition catalogue number on the CD label.
And they are not the same editions.
the issue though is that it’s not just different packaging or a repackage, it is an entirely different album. no overlap between songs included
hi!! thanks for helping me on edits so far haha, look forward to working with you to improve the kpop info on mb
i’ll definitely check that out! i started a spreadsheet last year of every kpop debut i can find so that looks totally up my alley lol
Is it the result of a shop or customer mistake, swapping CD and packaging with another album?
If so, don’t add anything to MB, based on this.
