Replication packets: how many?

Hello,
I’ve just installed and launched a musicbrainz VM image and I’m running the initial replication (“bin/replicate now”). It’s downloading packets and cranking along, but this is taking days. I’m up to packet #121021 and counting. Should I have re-indexed first? How long can I expect this to run? Thanks for any advice.

Which VM image exactly?
IMHO is it almost always better/faster to download the newest full dump and then only the replication packets from the last few days.

You should run the (re-)index as the last step, after applying the latest replication packet.

First, thanks very much for your reply. This is the 2018-08-14 image, found at ftp://ftp.eu.metabrainz.org/pub/musicbrainz-vm/. I’m using the installation guide at https://musicbrainz.org/doc/MusicBrainz_Server/Setup#Running_with_VirtualBox. I’d very much like to build directly from the most recent full dump, but the guide at the URL above seems not to discuss this. How does one load from a full dump? Is there a vboxmanage command, or is this done directly via psql? Thanks again.

You might have better success using the docker version. See https://github.com/yvanzo/musicbrainz-docker for more information.

Download and applying replication packets from more then a year takes ages to complete…
Like @rdswift I also suggest do use the much newer docker variant.

That did the trick. Thanks!
