No clear answer as it depends of the content and how it’s promoted.
To make it more easy I personnally split between those cases:
-
Compilations not mixed: No issue normally but sometimes the compiler name could be seen on front cover → Various Artists and relationship for compiler
-
Compilations slightly mixed (generally just some transitions between tracks): DJ name don’t appear on front cover or there is a “famous” one shown more for marketing puprose than mixing performance → I use Various Artists
ex: Release group “Dancefloor FG Été/Summer 2006” by Various Artists - MusicBrainz -
“Real” DJ-mixes: DJ name is clearly shown on covers + the tracks are edited → I credit the release to the DJ
ex: Release “Mix-Up, Volume 3” by Ken Ishii - MusicBrainz or Release group “Buddha‐Bar III” by Ravin - MusicBrainz
In other words think about how you listen to the release: Do you pick it for the mix performance or as it s a nice compilation of tracks you like?
Then that’s not a perfect science and I tend to keep DJ/Compiler credited when going to some obscure release where the name is used to credit the work done and not just for marketing
ex: Release “Enchanting Songs of Thailand and Cambodia” by Jaro Sounder - MusicBrainz
