I purchased a release directly from a jazz artist’s website. In addition to the release they gave me 5 bonus tracks for free. They just have file names, no metadata. So, I can still name them based off of that. Would each recording be considered a single or should I just add them as standalone recordings?
What about adding a new release for the album+bonus tracks with an annotation indicating it’s direct from the artist?
Well, I wasn’t sure if it was for everyone or not. If I remember right it was in a follow-up email from the artist thanking me for my support and just gave me a link to download the extra free tracks. In other words, she might do that for anyone who buys any of her albums directly from her site.
I would classify the contents of the follow-up email the same as Bonus Disc - #38 by yindesu and Bonus Disc - #41 by tigerman325
I’m going to just add each track as a promo single. There is no metadata indicating that they were intended to be grouped together. They were just files with the name of the recording. But yeah, I wasn’t even thinking about that situation you pointed out because this was digital. That sometimes throws me off of the situation. But really is no difference than the promos mentioned there.
If I simply emailed someone a track I wouldn’t consider it a “release” at all tbh. If a few tracks were together in a zip file, or cover art, that would change things. Even then it’s tricky - what’s the release date? Without artist input there’s no way to know when they were first emailed to someone (or shared to a friend via chat, or whatever we’re considering qualified as a release event). Tricky.
Turns out a few tracks appeared on a release that was later released. So, just matched them to that. Yeah, there was no release date. No metadata at all. But some of the tracks appeared to be just different mastering or are pre-release recordings. Only I think maybe 3 weren’t already on MB on other releases.
Sounds like a case for standalone recordings.
