I’ve already raised on JIRA: https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/STYLE-2703
As many of you know I like to try and fill in a lot of gaps with sourced knowledge found in various non-internet mediums (magazines, books etc.). One thing that came up in todays reading was that Ingrid Chavez was a protégé of Prince.
I thought hmm haven’t seen that as a relationship option come up, and yep it doesn’t really exist. We’ve got Teacher>Student relationship but I feel that protégé is maybe a bit more of a relaxed term that could be quite useful to track.
Some good examples of this would be:
- Akon to Lady GaGa
- Dr. Dre to Eminem
- Usher to Justin Bieber
- Eminem to 50 Cent
- Eminem to Obie Trice
- Dr. Dre to Kendrick Lamar
- Lil’ Wayne to Nicki Minaj
- Lil’ Wayne to Drake
- Jay-Z to J. Cole
- Tiesto to Martin Garrix
To add to this, the protégé guide (not really too certain on the exact terminology yet) isn’t there so much to teach musical talent or skill, but more to “pull up” artists and potentially assist them (usually through publicity) to launch their careers; which to me is distinct enough from a teacher/student relationship.
As with anything like this, editors would need to be confident that this relationship does exist - preferably with receipts, such as interviews, press statements etc.
This would also in my eyes be different to any kind of “influenced by” relationship, which can often be tricky and relatively hands off from either side of the relationship (many artists could for example say they were influenced by The Beatles, yet have never met any of the band in person).
