Proper artist credit for a jazz track from a film score

Hi again,

I’m still struggling to find the proper way to make good edits for a fairly complex release ( https://www.discogs.com/release/5222480-Various-Beat-Square-Cool )

Regarding, for instance, the 3rd CD in the set, I have the following data to work with:

As you can see, for instance for track 09, the artist credited on the sleeve is “Duke Ellington / Billy Strayhorn”. The original author of the “jazz standard” is Billy Strayhorn, but in the Personnel page of the booklet, we can see that this specific recording is performed by Louis Armstrong and others.

What should I put in the artist section for this release then?

As you say, Billy Strayhorn is the composer. The soundtrack was composed by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn (and performed by Louis Armstrong and others), and that’s what “Music by Duke Ellington / Billy Strayhorn” means.

So recording artists are the aforementioned musicians.¹ Ellington/Strayhorn are the composers of the associated work.

EDIT: ¹) for the actual recording artist I would use “Louis Armstrong” only, not all of them.
EDIT 2: …or Duke Ellington and His Orchestra for all? That’s not any official credit though and can hardly be said for all tracks. But recording artists should not be the composers.

So following you advice, I think I’ll go for this:

  1. Take the A Train → Billy Byers
  2. Battle Royal (aka Big Bash) → Louis Armstrong
  3. Birdie Jungle → Duke Ellington
  4. Mood Indigo → Murray McEachern
  5. Autumnal Suite → Duke Ellington
    etc. to keep only the main performer or group for the artist field.

Some of the musicians mentioned in the booklet alongside Duke Ellington can’t be found on the Duke Ellington and His Orchestra (thanks for the pointer!), but most of them are. I’ll have to check how to add those later on.

It’s not performed by his orchestra. Duke Ellington’s Orchestra would cover somehow the musicians he worked with, but it’s not correct for these recordings. It was just an idea, but I don’t think, it was a good one.

This release has very detailed recording credits. That’s very much better than Wikipedia: Paris Blues - Wikipedia
So all performers can be added to the respective recording - perfect for MB! :slight_smile:

I finally manage to make all the edits. But… I noticed afterwards I made several mistakes:

Since the edits are still pending, should I cancel everything and start again, or wait until the voting period is over and then amend them?
