Picard has suddenly stopped working properly

MusicBrainz Picard

Reporting here as recommended by @Freso and @SothoTalker on #musicbrainz.

Picard has stopped working for me all of a sudden. I am using Picard 1.4.2 on a Mac running macOS 10.13.2. My primary usage case is creating and linking AcoustID fingerprints to their associated tracks in MusicBrainz.

My workflow has remained unchanged since I started doing this about one year ago. All my source files are well tagged with good metadata. I start by dragging the source files from the left pane pf Picard into the centre pane. I then click on “Cluster” to group them into individual albums (normally this produces just one album). I then click on “Scan” to generate fingerprints for each of the tracks in the album. Typically, this then causes the tracks to go from grey text to black text which indicates a fingerprint has been created. Sometimes this causes matching albums to appear in the right pane, but my typical usage case is when it does not match the fingerprints and does not result in an album, appearing in the right pane. I then manually load the correct album from MusicBrainz in the right pane and drag’n’drop the files from the centre pane to the right pane. When all the tracks are matched up, I hit “Submit AcoustIDs” which then results in the associations being saved in MusicBrainz.

However, recently none of this has been working. Sometimes Picard just refuses to calculate the fingerprints. Other times it calculates the fingerprints, and I can drag them to the matching tracks in the right pane, but when I hit “Submit AcoustIDs” it fails.

I have generated Error/Debug logs for both of those scenarios. In the case of the second scenario, I have created separate Error/Debug logs for the “Scan” and “Submit AcoustIDs” phases. These are labelled Picard Logs 1, 2, and 3 respectively.

BAH!! Seems I can’t attach them. They are seriously big files, so I will attempt to upload them as individual replies to this initial post.

I have screen grabs corresponding to all three scenarios, and it seems I can attach those, so it’s all I can do for now.

Picard Log 2 (First ~30,000 characters (out of >80,000) only):

I can’t do this. The freakin’ logs are just waaaaaaaay too big :frowning:

Try storing them to something like Pastebin and then post the link here.

Great idea. Thx

I’m wondering if this is the cause of the problem. In Picard Preferences, under the “fingerprinting” section, there is an orange highlighted message saying “Please select a valid fpcalc executable”. I’m pretty certain I’ve never been in here or changed anything. The default selection is “/chromaprint-fpcalc-1.4.2-macos-x86_64 2/fpcalc”. Does that look sensible?

OK … that solved at least part of it. I navigated my way around the contents of the Picard.App until I found an fpcalc executable, and set that in the preferences. Now I am generating the fingerprints OK. However, the problem described by my Picard Log 3 Error/Debug log is still happening. The associated error seems to be this one: “AcoustID: submission failed with error ‘Error downloading http://api.acoustid.org:80/v2/submit - server replied: BAD REQUEST’: parameter “duration.75” must be a positive integer” … sometimes the number after “duration.” is different.

I’m not familiar with the Mac at all (Linux and Windows here), but that sure looks like it could be the problem. Could be it isn’t finding fpcalc (or perhaps it’s looking for a 32-bit version and finding a 64-bit version or vice-versa).

That is definitely beyond my level of understanding. Perhaps @lukz can shed some light on it?
