I don’t have much news. Getting packed to head back to BCN tomorrow (from Canada visit).
I’ve been writing to pending users and answering client emails.
I think we have one new Gold sign-up.
TuneIn.
Thanks to team members who continue to forward me contact info, from whatever source.
There is a lot of back and forth with the smallest and biggest supporters.
I hope I’m getting better at explaining our supporter system.

I was in BCN with ruaok last week, as you may know we had serious issues with the whole infrastructure
so basically just fixed what i could and finally started to work on docker image
i prepared one image for our ftp
and another for rsyncing between containers or hosts
i still need to finish the public rsyncd image

edit classes are still buggy. not much news there
looked into docker and started playing with separating mbs services into different containers
hope to make more progress on that this week, anyway.

Attended the GCI Winners summit/meeting/thing with gcilou and opatel99 (and brief visit from CallerNo6).
Visited the Internet Archive together with CallerNo6 and Clint on Friday, where we had a really good talk with Eric Blossom and Mek of the Archive CD (or whatever it’s called) team. (Mek has joined us as mekarpeles at least in MusicBrainz, possibly also MetaBrainz by now? Eric sounded like he might also join us.)
Tried to keep somewhat up with IRC and forums, but have also been distracted by new shinies (NewLaptop, new ODROID-C2, new Steam Controller) and generally semi-vacationing and hanging out with CallerNo6 and strycore (lead of #lutris).

this week was spent in
finishing the track.scrobble & token fetching part
replaced some code with concise code and some PEP8 + pylint fixes
documented some functions and separated common code in native_API and compat_API into separate api_tools.py
and finished with generic XML → JSON using the lastfm rules.

I worked on the client being able to make request to the server for pending jobs for a user. Wrote the server and client code for that. This week I ll be evaluating different formats for data storage in AB and deciding on the best one and also need to solve some issues with gaia PPA upload.

I made some updates to the way users are displayed on MeB.org, deployed a bunch of stuff, added new supporters. Reviewed plenty of GSoC stuff and answered some questions. And reviewed MBS PRs.

I worked on the AB server API endpoitn to accept submission without MBIDs
Also wrote the client part for the submission CLI to test the communication
Yesterday started to modify the schema to identify support the dataset items submission

I had some technical difficulties over the past couple weeks, but I’ve resolved them and will be more active. I’ve scheduled some time to speak with Quora about the status of his project.
I also have some upgrades to rika in my sights and some work on BB.

I integrated my achievement system into the profile pages, and allow users to select which badges and titles they want to display on their page, also got a bunch of new achievements added to the system that all work properly
Got some sql stuff merged into master, and arranged new meeting times with Leftmost and LordSputnik for the coming weeks

so, zas already covered what happened last week.
traumatic. loss of sleep. it was utterly fucking painful.
I could really do without ever doing that again.
turns out all of this was digital west’s problem.
but they never said what they fixed and they just didn’t take us seriously.
yea, I get that we’ve been having a lot of problems, but we never asked them for help.
when we did ask for help, they mostly ignored us.
it wasn’t until I emailed the CEO that we finally got some attention.
the other thing that this underscored is that we’re massively living on borrowed time.
our machines are brittle and ready to die.
we knew that, but it is far worse that I expected.
so, rather than spend more weeks hunting down every little aspect of what might be going wrong, we’re going to go all hands on deck to dockerize everything and then move to NewHost
as. soon. as. possible.
the kicker? the guy we hired to do the switch replacement became ill in the middle of it.
today is his first day back at work.
things went so bad, it even broke murphy’s law.
in other topics, Universal owes us $38k. Google $40k.
and our bank account is looking pretty good due to chrisskye’s work.
so, that means that we should hire another perl developer.
we have the money and bitmap needs help

I’ve been working on finishing up the track search dialog box.
Added a search box into that dialog, so one can search further without closing the dialog.
Added support for advanced query syntax for searching tracks from within Picard, though hacky.
Opened up a PR related to my work → https://github.com/metabrainz/picard/pull/475

I think the issue is it goes out of sync with each schema change and dies and nobody wants to bother fixing it because well, it’s not our main product, it’s just stuff for software which doesn’t use MB…

@Rob proposes to sunset the FreeDB gateway in 1 year, telling people to either update their client to use MB proper or use FreeDB proper. Until then, @chirlu will be given access to a Google VM for hosting it. @Rob will write a blog post about the sunsetting at a later point.
