That’s mostly so people know how to communicate with you if needed, and also to know what to expect - if someone who only speaks English adds a Spanish album, I won’t expect them to be able to follow the correct Spanish capitalization, for example. It’s not mandatory though!
It’s also used to determine what language the WIkipedia blurb on entity pages should use if there is no Wikipedia page in the same language as your UI language.
