Question on how to handle an artist “name change”. The band mele switched form "メレ" to “mele” officially with their latest release. It’s a bit sloppy and on Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Music it has lead to their library being split into pre and post name change. What’s the best way to reflect that in their Musicbrainz libary? “mele” was already their english alias, should that be changed to official and have the Kanji as an alias instead or should it be left as is an newer releases be put under the new title “mele”?
IThis topic is about メレ.
OHP still says メレ
Maybe streaming sites are geo-localised?
What about a purely Japanese streaming site, like mora?
OK, checked, mora is also still メレ.
JP Apple Music is also still メレ
You didn’t name or link to their latest release.
Can you check mora and JP Appel Music, if you see it, there?
more context:
It seems they are previously taking a break and coming back with romaji name in 2026-04-28.
I guess, the reason of two artist entries in digital streaming services are because they started to use different distributor (old: ??, new: TuneCore JP, you can see “TCJP” in mora’s release url https://mora.jp/package/43000074/TCJPR0001741770/ ) so services failed to link them
Bands changing names happens all the time. e.g.,
It’s very simple:
- don’t touch any historical releases
- change the artist name to the new name
- update the aliases
- use the correct credited name for each new MB submission
@Virge23
I have added the aliases.
I leave it up to you to rename artist, basing your edit on a useful edit note, like :
2026.04.28 https://x.com/mele___official/status/2049140179039092838 => 発表の通り、本日より「メレ」から「mele」として歩んでいきます。
You’ll find their work under both. They went on hiatus last year and took up the romanized mele as the official title officially starting with their latest single but their back catalog is still under (メレ). I’ll link to their latest single as well as some conversations on social media following news of the name “change”.

Social media recognition:
Renamed. Will I have to manually revise their older listings to use their archaic name after the rename goes through or does that not impact existing entries?
No because you have not selected any artist credit for change, which is good. ![]()
