itunes.apple.com artists and albums now redirect to music.apple.com, but adding an itunes.apple.com URL as an external link automatically selects the “purchase for download” type, while music.apple.com doesn’t: is it possible to fix it?

It is, but we’ve chosen not to do so that way.
The new Apple Music links put the focus primarily on the Apple Music streaming service, with a small footnote about the iTunes Store for releases available there.
There are several tickets languishing in the pipeline to rectify this situation:
