ISRC mismatch

Hi, I purchased a download of Release group “BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall” by Sam Smith - MusicBrainz from qobuz. I noticed that qobuz has a different barcode for it so i added a new release https://musicbrainz.org/release/ddc30586-7354-4516-9dc1-1d5b362d8588 .
When i went to tag my music with Picard i discovered that the ISRCs in qobuz download do not match any of the ISRCs in the musicbrainz existing releases. I wouldn’t think qobuz wouldn’t change ISRCs. I’ve not had this happen before so what do i do?

Have you searched for your ISRCs on https://isrcsearch.ifpi.org/ ?
It is not uncommon for different ISRCs to be registered for the same recording, but it is rare for this to happen in such a short period of time.

i did not know about that website. according to it both ISRCs are valid and bring up the same song. so these songs will have 2 entries?

I’ve seen it before where they will have a different ISRC for hi-res releases than the standard resolution. This release is a 48kHz/24-bit release, so it’s very likely that is the reason for the different ISRCs. They are the same recording. @mustcycle You can add the ISRCs as additional ISRC via https://magicisrc.kepstin.ca/

is there something in the release info that i should set to note this is not a hi-res? qobuz has a hi-res and cd quality releases and i got the cd 16-bit release. that also i guess explains the different barcode

Disambiguation or Annotation?

I typically will say “Available in 48kHz/24-bit” in the annotation to show its also available in the higher resolution from at least one of the linked sites. Many sites let you buy or stream qualities below that from the site. On non-hi-res releases, you can also add that in the annotation if you want.

lastly just to make sure, there doesn’t seem to be a way to set what release has which ISRC when there are multiple?

No, unfortunately there is no way to do that outside of the edit notes. Typical edit note on the ISRC import is “Submitted ISRCs from [copy and paste URL of Qobuz release] to [copy and paste URL of MB release].

A release can have multiple ISRC’s, if the label registered in both US and EU an ISRC. The Barcode can be different, too.

And rarely, can have the same barcode, but different ISRCs on some recordings. Not common but have seen it. Like, Spotify has a few different ISRCs than the same release on Apple.

I understand that a recording can have multiple ISRCs, especially if consolidated. However, I don’t see how that would be common with releases. A track is typically modeled as a recording on a release.

when put into distribution, either on a CD or within a DDEX ERN, that track should only have one ISRC associated with it. I’m sure there are corner cases, but it’s really hard to imagine how this would happen - can a CD even accommodate multiple ISRCs for a track?

If the recording is only on a single release, then yes. Multiple ISRCs usually happen if the recording gets included on multiple releases, e.g. compilations or re-releases. Especially with compilations I have seen it several times that they just got completely new ISRCs assigned to all the recordings, instead of the original ones.
