Is "directed by" a conductor credit?

On Castel del Monte II: Pietre di luce the Calixtinus Ensemble is “directed by” Gianni de Gennaro - does that mean he is the conductor? Gianni de Gennaro is also a vocalist and may sing with the choir.

As I see it, a conductor waves a stick, and a director gives verbal direction. I don’t set them the same.

For classical I would generally understand that as a conductor-equivalent credit if it means directed the performance rather than just being the ensemble’s artistic director.

Unfortunately, it is not specified whether he waves a stick.

Although the album is a kind of classical-jazz crossover, the pieces with the Calixtinus Ensemble can certainly be described as classical, if classical is the correct category for medieval songs. It’s probably best if I leave it at “conductor”. Thanks!

I was in orchestras in my youth through college. At least here in the US, they are considered the same thing. I have always set director credits as conductor.
