If so would be useful to prevent it happening in the first place.

Indeed, loops should be forbidden for most of relationship types!
Such issue has to be filed at http://tickets.musicbrainz.org
Hmm, doesnt seem possible to delete the relationship
As of a few seconds ago Reosarevok has put in a request to remove one, and 3 people have voted yes for that removal and none have voted no. The expiry time is listed as 6 days
