I reorder your wizard robe and tracks

this release, originally sourced from Napster (according to the edit note) is a bit odd:

the track order is the same as the streaming release, sourced from Spotify:

however, the track times don’t match.

howeverever, the Napster track times do match different tracks on the Spotify release. for example:

  • Napster track 4 (Forbidden Fruit) is 8:01, while the Spotify track 4 is 5:25.
  • … but Spotify track 12 (In Favilla) is 8:02, while Napster track 12 is 7:18.
  • Napster track 5 (My Despair) is 4:54, while Spotify track 5 is 4:44.
  • … but Spotify track 13 is 4:55, while Napster track 13 is 4:35.

and so on, and so on. basically, it seems like the track titles and track lengths both refer to actual tracks on the album, but either the track lengths are correct and the titles are misordered, or else the titles are correct and the track lengths are misordered.

since i can’t find any sources for the Napster release (neither of the sources given by the original editor in 2014 work anymore), i’m not sure how to fix this. the obvious fix would just be to remove the track lengths entirely, but if it’s the titles who are wrong, that would just make it worse.

what do?

If you set the track names to match the times, does the track times listed order then match anything? i.e. LP? Alphabetical?

It could be files were sitting on a hard disk in an odd order when they uploaded the times.

Actually it is weirder… I tried to find a pattern in the times and not all of them are shuffled. Some are just plain new times. Assuming they don’t match a 12" or extended versions were swapped into the release?

AcoustID can often be a good hint of what someone may have done. From AcoustIDs you see track 2 has track 11 AcoustID. Track 4 is track 12. Track 5 is Track 13. Track 11 is Track 7. Track 12 is Track 8. Basically - follow the wrong AcoustIDs to get your track name order. That would imply the times are bogus.

But then that theory falls down when you look at tracks 9 and 10 with track times that don’t match AcoustID lengths.

Probably safest to nuke it, fix it. Not as if the Napster version would have been official if it is in that kinda mess…
