Hi, recently been learning to use musicbrainz to finally sort through my digital music library that’s been built up over 2.5 decades by me and my dad, and been trying to add releases for the versions of albums that I’ve discovered that I have but aren’t on musicbrainz. However, I’m slightly stumped on how to handle my version of Return To The Forbidden Planet compared to the ones already added.
The two release versions in the library both set each track to be one artist and only one artist, whereas the version I’ve got had added specific names for the singers (or company) for each song depending on who sang it (e.g., I'm Gonna Change The World is credited as John Ashby and Christian Roberts compared to just Bob Carlton). I believe the recordings are exactly the same, just the credits are different.
Is this a situation where it’s okay for all recordings to be edited to have these extra credits? Are you referring to Release “Return to the Forbidden Planet” by C.C. Productions - MusicBrainz and/or Release “Return to the Forbidden Planet (1989 original London cast)” by Bob Carlton - MusicBrainz?
A few suggestions:
- Yes, change the release artists to Bob Carlton. That is the artist credited on the cover.
- If the recordings are exactly the same, merge them. However, they appear to have significantly different lengths. Unclear whether that is an error.
- Add the performers to relationships.
- Change the recording artists to the performers.
- I am not sure whether the track artists should be Bob Carlton or the performers. My guess would be Bob Carlton, but this genre may do things differently from classical.

yep, those are the two I’m referring to. Wonderful, thank you very much! I’ll have a look at my versions compared to the ones on the site and if the lengths are significantly different I’ll set it as a new recording rather than pulling in the ones already on there.
You may also conclude that one of the versions in MB right now has typos in the track lengths, in which case you could fix it to match yours.
Yea, having seen the difference in track lengths already on MB and neither of them being that close to what my files are, I think I’m going to hold off on doing any additions until I can get confirmation of what version these tracks may have come from. Will see if the original cd can be found!
Those are very old releases, so you may have trouble tracking down good reasons for the data given. One of them cites Amazon, but I don’t see any track lengths there. One of the Amazon reviews does say that Amazon’s track list is wrong.

That review says the tracklist is wrong, it’s 24 tracks, not 22.

Just a small pedantic point, the track info is all wrong here on the Amazon website, there are 24 tracks, not 22, and they are not at all in the order as on the Amazon website, though the listing on the back of the CD is correct.
Its also not in the gracenote cd database so if it matters to you , you’ll have to type it all in yourself.
I will try adding it if I can.
This would make a good MB editor, BTW.

If you look at https://musicbrainz.org/edit/22062868, you’ll see that the original editor only added lengths to 20 of the 24 tracks. I would guess that that is because they were trying to reconcile Amazon’s bad track list with reality. In any case, I don’t trust any of those track lengths.
