How to deal with "historic" entries in MusicBrainz editing history?

See above artist as an example. I’m confused by the (historic) entry at the beginning of the edit history.

Should this MBID be treated as “belonging” to the Billy Joel backing band…or the group that did “RX Queen” on the Deftones tribute?

Thanks.

The oldest credit is for track ‘My Journey’s End’ (https://musicbrainz.org/recording/221db4e1-68f9-4b64-b6a6-915646f2102f) which is by ‘The Lost Souls’ band that Billy Joel was a member of (https://www.discogs.com/artist/423717-The-Lost-Souls-2). In theory, the other band and hip hop artist tracks should be moved off (I can also help with this).

However, since we already have a newer(?) entry for this group (https://musicbrainz.org/artist/23d7cd16-42a5-49c7-aa9d-a1d8133d83a5?all=1), it may be simpler to re-purpose the artist you linked, depending on which “true artist” is primarily credited there.

Took a closer look at this and decided to help organize it. I cross checked many (all?) the recordings between 15-20 “Lost Souls”-like artists and corrected many of them. I also added all of the main recordings/singles from these artists, to prevent incorrect artist selection in the case of needing to add new recordings. After the merge of the two Billy Joel related entities, all should be quite accurate, at least compared to what it was before

Edit #144071968 - Merge artists

And if I learned anything… It’s that a lot of 1960s garage rock bands thought their souls were lost :joy:
