How to clean up pre-NGS release with conflicting info from 2-3 different releases?

https://musicbrainz.org/release/40bcb8cb-dac9-4561-9b59-2e6ee26a180a is currently the only release in its release group, and it seems to have conflicting info from what should be different releases. E.g., it has a barcode of 5991811225629 but the cover art doesn’t show any barcode. It also has the label Hungaroton Classic - MusicBrainz (which matches https://www.discogs.com/release/28462651-Puccini-Veronika-Kincses-Peter-Dvorský-Lajos-Miller-Klára-Takács-Giuseppe-Patané-Madama-Butterfl) instead of Hungaroton - MusicBrainz (which matches the cover art). And the release year doesn’t match either release on Discogs. The barcode that doesn’t match the cover art comes from Edit #9469757 - MusicBrainz around when the release was first added, and the cover art was imported from Discogs much more recently.

This should be split into two releases, right? And there’s no way to split a release directly other than adding a separate one and editing them to be different?

Normally I’d try to keep the current MBID with whatever release was intended when it was first added, but this was added before NGS, so I don’t know if that makes sense here. It looks like most of the early info that conflicts with the cover art was just a release event imported from websites rather than from the physical release that was added, so I’m not sure that matters for which release keeps the original MBID. On the other hand, is there any way to move cover art from one release to another? If not, it would be easier to keep the MBID for the release that matches the cover art.

CC @chabreyflint who added the cover art. I didn’t see Discourse users for the editors who added the release or the release event initially.

Yes. Split up the best you can. This is quite common to see artwork added without checks.

It is common for a chain of mistakes to build up. Edits being scattered over different years. An editor hitting the “import artwork from Discogs” link without realising that the Discogs link is wrong.

No automatic way of doing the split. There is the script that will clone a release which helps. And artwork can be downloaded in bulk by using the “Internet Archive” link at the bottom of a cover art page. There is no “move” option for artwork.

Yep, sorry, I obviously picked the wrong Discogs link when uploading cover art to this Release which I cleaned up 3 years ago. I probably would update this Release to match the cover art - and then add/duplicate a new Release matching the barcode 5991811225629. Seems to be the least time consuming way…

Thanks!

I also just realized that I don’t see the edits that added the disc IDs in the edit history. I’m guessing that means they were added a while ago and were lost/hidden by a schema migration or something? The disc IDs match my copy which matches the cover art, so that might be another point in favor of keeping the MBID with the cover art instead of the barcode. Though it’s possible the other release has the same disc IDs.

Both Releases are now in the DB Release group “Madama Butterfly” by Puccini; Veronika Kincses, Peter Dvorský, Lajos Miller, Klára Takács, Giuseppe Patanè - MusicBrainz . Thanks for having a second look

Thank you! I was planning to get to it within the next few days, but you saved me the effort
