Frank Zappa released several albums containing edited recordings of guitar solo sections from live performances. For example, Guitar, Trance-Fusion, the Shut Up “n Play your Guitar series, and on other releases. He gave these solo sections new names and sometimes edited them a bit and added short applause or unrelated spoken vocal comments. People have figured out the original performances from which these solos were derived, for example here and here. In almost all cases there is no release of the full live recording of the piece, so we can’t use the recording relationship “edit of”. We are discussing this in Edit #118338798.
One option would be to add a recording relationship, e.g. “A Cold Dark Matter” is a live partial recording of “Inca Roads” (dated). Here we could leave intact the relationship “A Cold Dark Matter” is a live recording of “A Cold Dark Matter”. Another option would be to link at the Work level, “A Cold Dark Matter” is based on or quotes music from or is an arrangement of “Inca Roads”. We could even merge “A Cold Dark Matter” work (and all the other Inca Roads solos that have been given work names) with “Inca Roads”, but this would eliminate the Work names that Zappa himself devised for these solo extracts. He considered his solos to be mini-sound sculptures, and in some cases the recordings include added spoken vocal embellishments or edits of the solos.
