I found no ticket about this case, but much discussion in the forum. To me, it looks clear and unambiguous what the guidelines say:
- Person artist names have sort name “family name, given name”.
a. Middle names and nicknames should be treated as a part of the given name.
…but apparently it is not so clear how editors interpret these lines in cases where the middle name (or nickname) is used like a family name.
@jesus2099 tried to correct the much discussed example of Janelle Monáe Robinson: Edit #57690593 - MusicBrainz …but had to cancel due to No votes. I do not care much about Janelle Monáe either - I have no physical release. My physical items are ordered by MB artist sort, therfore to me it’s relevant for Anna Phoebe McElligott, currently also “Phoebe, Anna”, last changed by @HibiscusKazeneko in this edit: Edit #19459571 - MusicBrainz
I’ve looked up other artists (the two I have known of) performing as {first name} {middle name}:
Peter Alexander Ferdinand Maximilian Neumayer → artist sort “Alexander, Peter”
Clara Luzia Maria Humpel → “Luzia, Clara”
I feel there should be some clarification in the guidelines.
Or is there general agreement that the sort name, defined by guidelines, was not meant for cases without legal last name in a two-part artist name …and the duck test can also be used to determine artist sort for artists with an “artist last name”?
If that’s consensus, then I will move my physical items of Anna Phoebe (CDs and vinyls) to their proper places - under P.
