What should be done in the case of featured artists that are either not listed in the album artwork at all (but documented), or mentioned in a place on the album artwork other than the track listing itself?

When musicians or vocals are credited in the booklet but don’t appear as featuring/featured artist on the tracklist, you then only link them as artist-recording relationships, with the release relationship editor.
If booklet doesn’t say on which track they appear, set them as release-artist relationships.
When they appear as featuring artists on the tracklist, keep linking them with relationships, in addition to setting track AC, with the release editor.
