Fake releases added by bad actors, need eyes on

Can anyone work out what is happening here? Editor making some strange edits

https://musicbrainz.org/artist/d462ac0e-10ad-41c3-8b54-c9d724c62fad

They seem to be adding duplicate artists and releases, and then renaming them into a mega compilation? If I feed the 音樂 into a translator it comes back to me as “music”.

Used a different link to the editor… now their editing is disabled the first link I posted fails.

Your first link is broken.

Have fixed the link now. I think the other link went fubar when their editing was disabled.

Something strange going on here. Look at all the edits for this group, https://musicbrainz.org/artist/d462ac0e-10ad-41c3-8b54-c9d724c62fad . Started on 20th July, by a series of now deleted editors, and Editor “ffitena” - MusicBrainz as the latest. A grand total of 0 edit comments makes me think the whole lot should be removed.

I totally second that. I expect all the editors are the same person and this is some kind of hidden playlist going on. Just brief looks at the work makes it clear that this has zero use for MusicBrainz and is some kind of personal project.

音樂 is just “Music” as far as my Babel Fish informs me.

And how does one go about deleting that much duff data? It needs one of those scripts to blitz this one.

It gets weirder when you check the edit history of https://musicbrainz.org/artist/d462ac0e-10ad-41c3-8b54-c9d724c62fad

They create duplicate artists for everything they add. Note the first entry is https://musicbrainz.org/artist/55d13af8-7586-4de0-80e1-6f5745e0d8b2 Yet this artist already exists.

I fear if we look back through the 8 pages of edits attached to that “group” since 20/7/2026 this will repeat all the way through. This is how I got aware of it via a duplicated Bjork.

Maybe if every recording linked against https://musicbrainz.org/artist/d462ac0e-10ad-41c3-8b54-c9d724c62fad is deleted then all the duplicated artists will also disapper?

Another https://musicbrainz.org/artist/1869bec2-7e08-49fb-9c42-a6a0f01e13e5 which I assume is a different character set to Björk - MusicBrainz as a search for the one does not bring up the other…

Something is going on. They all look like the same editor. Probably more,

Look at the pattern of edits for https://musicbrainz.org/artist/d462ac0e-10ad-41c3-8b54-c9d724c62fad, and the same thing repeats. Add a release, make a corrupted artist name using alternate characters, change the release artist to https://musicbrainz.org/artist/d462ac0e-10ad-41c3-8b54-c9d724c62fad. And repeat with next release…

Leaving dozens of duplicated artists with duplicated releases and recordings. This has to be a bot doing it as so much has happened since the 20th.

I would like to look at this more but am leaving for the day.

Maybe I am paranoid, but it appears someone is testing what takes votes or what they can get away with.

They have created two Bjorks - https://musicbrainz.org/artist/1869bec2-7e08-49fb-9c42-a6a0f01e13e5 and Björk - MusicBrainz

Using alt character sets I assume? As they don’t appear in a search.

There is a bot being tested out creating something. That https://musicbrainz.org/artist/d462ac0e-10ad-41c3-8b54-c9d724c62fad is the key that they are creating. No idea as to a why. And it is not hard for something like this to get past the eyes of people checking new entries as this is new data and new artists to stays away from most people’s eyes

Is there a way to mass-vote on even a single pageful of edits? Maybe a TamperMonkey script? I haven’t found one.

I tried shift-selecting a range, which doesn’t work. I didn’t think it would, but wanted to try before asking.

Guides / Userscripts - MusicBrainz Power Vote I think?

That did it, thanks!

Excellent. And if I follow correctly, deleting the Releases will mean the orphaned recordings should also disappear due to no links? And if the Recordings disappear the fake artists should follow?

Every “Release” is made up of a single track. With a newly created artist that is then aliased to 音樂. So by deleting https://musicbrainz.org/release/4254eaba-2670-4915-8091-df36f12ddc44, will https://musicbrainz.org/recording/c06df97d-0b31-44a5-b88a-d9770f661cd0 and then Björk - MusicBrainz also disappear?

I’m gonna take an educated guess here, that only the relation of the recording to that specific release will be removed. If a recording is not linked to another release it’ll become orphaned and won’t show up in the GUI (unless you specifically search for it). Otherwise it’ll remain visible for other releases it is linked to.

Sounds plausible ? I never tried deleting stuff :grimacing:

You can find orphans if you go to an artist’s page and look at their list of recordings. On that page all recordings appear. But I’ve only ever found orphans with something linked. Like a link to a Work. Or a YouTube video. If there is nothing linked I am fairly sure it will self destruct in 7 days.

Just to clarify: when I said “linked” I meant linked to another record in the database (work, artist, whatever…). If the recording (entity) is truely orphaned I suppose it wouldn’t show up and indeed be pruned from DB.

The first one uses a Cyrillic Ve and the second a Greek Beta for the “B” character. Obviously intentional to avoid using the actual Björk artist and sneak under the radar. The first fake Björk wasn’t merged into 音樂 so isn’t currently being mass deleted, but probably should be?
