Fake/Ficticious Artist - Lunabag

This was posted to the subreddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/MusicBrainz/comments/1qkxpzp/can_anybody_tell_me_more_about_this_band/

On a bit of further investigation I do smell a rat here, I think this is all made up information. I can find no record or reference to any of this.

The editor, who seems to still be active adding AI slop, seems to be adding a fair few other questionable artists like Simon Seville - MusicBrainz

which is just the name of one of the Alvin and the Chipmunk characters. Many of those releases link to low-effort remixes of stuff on YouTube, but most of the metadata is just made up.

There’s then Alvin and the Chipmunkz as well, which is just all from this one editor.

Some of the additions are genuine (in the sense it’s music added to a streaming platform), see I.O.P.S.

There also then seems to be stuff appearing over on Discogs but the profile is just the name of one of the artists this editor has created on MBz?

I’ve reached out on one of the “Lunabag” releases asking for more detail, even if it is in Italian, but I doubt anything much will come of it.

Are we then in a position to begin to remove the stuff that is seemingly just junk, unless someone wants to properly re-add those Alvin & the Chipmunk remixes properly?

Edit: To add to this I’ve found a Spotify profile for an Alessio Fabbiani - which uses the photograph used on the Disco release.

Just going to list out the artists added and my thoughts:

  • Vocal Resolution Choir - possibly real
  • Snowblind - likely fake
  • Simon Seville - definitely fake, filled with miscredited/made up metadata
  • I.O.P.S. - definitely a band of some kind
  • Lunabag - likely fake
  • Alvin and the Chipmunkz - definitely fake, similar approach as Simon Seville
  • Alessio Fabbiani - maybe the actual name of our editor, likely fake (there is a previous attempt to create this on 11th March 2024, but it was removed)
  • 3by2 - seems real, links to a real enough Instagram profile
  • #ilmiobatteristaèminorenne - probably fake, link provided is a deleted Instagram post
  • The Mosquitos Guys - already deleted
  • Petti Rozzi - seems real, is on Spotify - badly entered metadata
  • Super Mario Bros Big Band - already deleted
  • Indenbrown - already deleted
  • Room6 - seems real
  • Radar - seems real enough, but likely junk metadata
  • Menestrelli Gonfi - not sure, there’s references to this on Spotify and YouTube but it’s all been removed?
  • Joe di Sopra - already removed

<<sigh>> This is why we can’t have nice stuff…

Hi!

The only fake artists on this list are (obviously) Simon Seville, Alvin and the Chipmunkz and Radar.

Lunabag, Snowblind, 3by2, #ilmiobatteristaèminorenne, I.O.P.S. and Menestrelli Gonfi are all bands of which I was a member.

All the songs from Lunabag and Snowblind were only released on some few CD-r so I can’t prove you any link.

All the songs from Menestrelli Gonfi were previously on all the streaming platforms but we decided to delete all of them.

Here you say that this Lunabag release was on 45RPM, could you provide a photo or link?

Or a photo or link regarding Lunabag’s live recordings/performance at Primo Maggio 2017? Or posters from any other live shows?

If that is not possible then it becomes difficult to trust anything that you add, edit or write, which is a serious problem for a community database that values accuracy.

Maybe I don’t understand the rules very well but if someone admits to adding fake artists, aren’t they already a significant problem?
