Do you reckon this is real? Photos of a CD did not appear when I asked the original editor, nor links where it could be bought/a source.
I have doubts too but it could be real, proof would be nice..
It’s been removed now, but I’m tempted to contact gaymichaelafton anyways next week (if nobody here has already) maybe I even get to buy a copy ![]()
Hello everybody! I hope everyone is doing well today.
In may of 2025, I had started a vote to remove a fake compilation album, which passed, thankfully! But nearly a year later, I have found a supposed ‘re-release’ of this album.
This is peculiar, I found this same compilation on Bandcamp, which was hosting re-uploaded music illegally, which I summarily reported and Bandcamp quickly took it down, or I would show you. If you like, you can visit the artists Bandcamp page, and see it redirects to the main page (found by looking at the artist page on MB ‘gaymichealafton’ and clicking the Bandcamp link)..
I would also like to note that his person seems to have a lot of fake info about them on other sites like Genius https://genius.com/artists/Gaymichaelafton which claims they have collaborated with Ross Federman, which is not true.I understand this is not related to MB, I just wanted to show people some more evidence of their unreliable history. You can even see the user ‘gaymichealafton’ is a main editor on these fake pages.
Here is a link to the edit vote: Edit #142769178 - MusicBrainz
And here is a pretty important link to my previous post requesting help voting this album for removal, I recommend you give it a look, as all my reasoning remains the same, as the album is the same: Fake compilation album - Vote request
To summarize, this release we’re looking at has many songs that the album creator clearly has no credit to redistribute (like works from Weezer and Melanie Martinez). And this album appears to have had no release besides the illegal and removed Bandcamp page for the album. At best, this is a pirate album, which is discussed in the https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Beginners_Guide
”While we welcome bootlegs, we discourage adding home-made compilations or mixtapes. These kinds of releases are not widely available and any information about them is typically only useful to the individual who created them. Releases such as these are usually removed from our database.”
Thank you for your time. If you have any additional questions and/or feedback, please let me know. I apologize if I made any mistakes, I am still not very experienced in Musicbrainz yet.
Trouble is, a bootleg is a bootleg. If it has actually been “released” to the public, it now has a reason to be in MusicBrainz. The person may have got tracks together without permission, and then scammed their way onto Bandcamp, but that got to a level of “release” instead of just a home taping.
It is a bootleg that should also be marked as withdrawn. And add an annotation to note the unofficial level of the release. But it is above the level of a home mix tape.
It is not unusual for this to happen. I have seen a few other occasions where someone creates a bandcamp page for a few weeks to distribute someone else’s music until they get shut down with the complaints.
Edited to add. Just looked at the track list. That is a funny mess. How long was it on Bandcamp? I can now see the reason to delete it. It looks more like a test to see if they can do something than a real compilation
There is a copy on MediaFire:
mjafckormpxzf
It said 2024. Not sure when in 2024, sorry.
Yes, this doesn’t feel at all like a real attempt to make anything of value. But I am not personally sure if that’s enough to delete it on. I mean. I know I want it to be deleted, but if it should be is another story. Their stuff just bugs me a lot, I hate seeing fake stuff on music sites, especially stuff that has music I really like. Their Genius profile is very telling… their ‘groups’ they are in.
How would I go about accessing it? Adding that with a / to the end of a Mediafire link doesn’t seem to work for me. Nor does adding /file/ and then that text. Sorry, never really used that site before.
Does Back + Spine make sense for a download only non-physical album?
It’s a folder
/folder/mjafckormpxzf
Yes, it certainly does make sense. I’ll often download albums from Bandcamp that were either ripped from a CD. Or the artist plain decided to create CD like artwork in case you wanted to burn it to a CD-R
I don’t think the artwork should be what decides how legit this is.
Example:
Download included scans of the original front and back of the CD. Some people add all kinds of artwork to the zips you get from Bandcamp.
It’s a tricky business. Even experienced users change their Vote. MB records everything. ![]()
