[Digital Media] Does a different "title" warrants a whole new release for censorship/political/sensible reasons ? Which title wins?

  • I searched extensively but I couldn’t find a conclusive answer[1].

I stumbled into a weird thing, twice.

  • 1st Case - CBTJ

So, the Montreal-based rapper “Rowjay” released a mixtape early in his carrer called “Carnaval de Finesse” that he put out first on :

His second-to-last song is called CBTJ (Compte Bancaire Toujours Juif), or, in English, “BAAJ (Bank Account Always Jew)”. 19 yo casual edgy antisemitism.

On streaming plateforms, the song called systematically C.B.T.J.
→ 3 dots added + meaning in parenthesises deleted.

Do I create another Release for the Streaming Platforms to distinguish with the Bancamp/Soundcloud that are IDENTICAL, CBTJ-excepted, in every other ways ?

  • 2nd Case - Christian Estrosi

Basically, the French rapper Infinit’ released in 2015 a “duet release” with the producer-composer DJ Weedim Plusss.

DJ Weedim and Infinit releases in july 2014 a preview single called “Christian Estrosi”.

Christian Estrosi is the actual mayor of Nice a sunny affluent city in southern France, the cliché being that it is inhabited by old people and gangsters ; French Riviera.

The song lyrics praise the Mayor for reaching his status even though he has not even graduated high school, like Infinit but the music video features weapons etc.

After the release, Infinit’ was called persona non grata in the city of Nice and was ejected from a concert venue in the city because he was about to sing the song with a far more popular rapper.

In solidarity, there was a petition and 7 rappers made a Remix of the song with Infinit’ with a music video called Christian Estrosi (Remix). It is the last track of the release Plusss.

The Mayor filed a complaint for defamation (+ of a high-profile civil servant). Christian Estrosi lost in october 2016 ; Infinit’ was found not guilty.

Consequences : the recordings are now called “Christian E.” and “Christian E. (Remix)” in every streaming platform AND in the physical album release.

Do I create another Recording + Releases only for the 2 songs with the Complete name, even if they are identical in any other ways except the title ? The two songs were only released on Youtube with the Music Video and Soundcloud.

Thank you in advance for your time !! viva musicbrainz !!!

  1. I have checked :

    • Vilifying Titles ; issue of censorship, very graphic cover etc. “Do we let them here ?”. Not my issue.

Recording Title VS Work Title Nearer, but the issue is more “what do we keep” and not “do I do another release”. ↩︎

In short: No to a new recording, yes to new release/s

If the recording/audio itself didn’t change, reuse the same recordings on the new releases. If the old releases/titles have been scrubbed from circulation you can set them to ‘withdrawn’.

Understood ! Thank you !!!

I had second thoughts to avoid clutter and all that for only a small title readjustment that is maybe covered by “Aliases” ; it makes sense nevertheless.
