Nobody can really decide if Japanese Breakfast is a performance name of the individual, or the band. This seems fine, not really problematic?
However I stumbled across another case which is more confusing. NZ artist Lake (Lake McKenna) founded Urbantramper, and is credited as “Lake” on releases like Tokon & The Colours. So far so good.
However, along the way, Lake began going by “Lake South”, (so, you have Lake South fka Lake) and also founded a new band with the same name.
Musicbrainz has an artist entry for Urbantramper, and there’s an entry for Lake South (the person).
There is not an entry for Lake McKenna, or Lake South the band. Should there be? I already find guidelines for artists with first-name mononyms somewhat confusing, and have a hard time thinking through what should happen here.
My main input is that I would not split the Lake South releases across separate artists (e.g. don’t split releases he recorded with a band and ones where he recorded solo). The genre and visual style stays consistent and I don’t believe the intent to split projects is there (no change in branding, they are all stored on the same Bandcamp and social pages, etc).
If you are still left with a good reason to make a new entity for Lake South/Lake McKenna the person, I don’t see any problem with it. If they ever started a project with a different moniker (e.g. they wanted to start fresh in a new genre, solo) we would definitely end up doing it, anyway.

I’m not itching to do really do anything, but cases like this really turn me around, so wanted to bring it up for discussion.
The one bit that maybe seems reasonable would be creating an artist entry for Lake McKenna, and building relationships from there? still seems awkward.
I don’t really know the answer… I agree it’s going to be awkward either way.

At the same time I don’t see a real need to split the two artists. When I would definitely split them is if Lake South ‘the band’ gets a solid lineup/you want to add band member relationships. I’m still seeing language like ‘the lineup that recorded this album…’ on some press stuff, which is why I’m not doing that yet, it still smells to me like ‘solo project that brought people in for a bit’. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be split, anyway, imo.
