Clearing composers as recording artists

Lately I’ve been concentrating on fixing recordings were the composer is incorrectly set as the recording artist. Most recently, I’ve been working on Robert Schumann. When I started, there were 28 pages of recordings where Schumann was the RA. Between @chabreyflint, @VBZPPlNQyJ , @ListMyCDs.com , and myself (and maybe a few others), we’ve gotten this down to only 5 pages.

What’s left is mostly poorly documented releases, and a lot of Alfred Scholz stuff that I’m reluctant to do much with (I’ve done some, but if there’s any doubt, I leave it alone).

There have also been a lot of new entries, courtesy of the Harmony script, that added to the list while we were fixing.

Anyway, I feel kinda good about it, and wanted to give kudos to those who have been involved.

Thanks for all your work on that! I don’t think I have contributed much to Schumann.

I did do the same for Beethoven, Busoni and Rachmaninoff last year. Now it’s an endless battle to keep them cleaned up.

Re Scholz, etc: when I was cleaning up Beethoven and Rachmaninoff, I set the artist to whatever Scholz nonsense was claimed. There were also many with no clear performers, so I set those to [unknown]. If someone tracks down the real performers, they are more than welcome to update them.

I think maybe I came across a lot of recording merges that you did on Schumann recordings, which is something I knew needed to be done, but I didn’t have the energy to find. A lot of those merges eliminated some of the ones I was going to have to fix, so thanks for that!

I did merge a bunch of recordings last week, but nothing compared to what I’m guessing were thousands of recordings y’all took care of.

Do you think there would be any benefit to keeping track of which composers have already been cleaned up? I know @chabreyflint has cleaned up couple dozen and @ListMyCDs.com has done Mozart.

Thanks to those named for taking time to make a difference.

I might just flag up that I have tentatively begun trying to sort out Handel’s water music. To be a little depressing I haven’t yet found a release which did not have one or more mistakes in recording/work relationships. As the movement titles are used somewhat, ahem, flexibly this requires actual listening to identify, but at least we have streamers. This is compounded by some entirely fictitious movements in the subworks of HWV 350, which I have a horrible suspicion originated many moons ago in an Alfred Scholtz release.

But back to the topic - kudos for the Schumann work.

That’s Scholz for you!
