Looking at https://musicbrainz.org/release/3f2f1c1d-d031-46c3-a6a3-9a0fb0bf4e80 which has been edited by many people who presumably have their own copies of the disc.
I have a copy of an album of the same name, for which tracks 1-6 match (tracks by Bernstein and Rutter), and sung by the Choir of Clare College, but tracks 7-13 are by Poulenc and are sung by the Corydon Singers, whereas on my own CD, tracks 7-8 are by Britten and 9-13 by Tippett and are sung by the Choir of Clare College.
I am an alumnus of Clare College and follow the choir, and I find it unbelievable that they would host tracks by a different choir and a different conductor. It feels like some kind of corruption has taken place and the poulenc tracks have been wrongly attached to this release, along with their edit history.
A number of courses of action occur to me at this point.
- Dive in, make my edits to the existing release and tell no one. (this is a no-no, of course)
- Create a brand new release group, matching the CD I have in my possession (bought from the shop at Clare College). Leave the other release/release group in place
- Create a brand new release group, matching the CD I have in my possession. Delete the other release/release group
- Create a new release within the existing release group, again using my own CD
- Ask for advice
Right now Iām asking for advice.
#3 would be my preference - but I canāt prove that the existing release is fictitious (or a corruption), so #2 is safer.
I hate leaving bad data in place, but itās not my data, so I feel deeply uneasy about deleting it, even though - in my opinion - it is utterly wrong.
As I say, Iām asking for advice.

Hi,
What barcode does yours have?
MusicBrainz has the track listing with Poulenc with barcode 5 028421 902968 (the release you linked). That seems to match this Ebay listing. Track list photo, matching with Poulenc by Corydon Singers.
Thereās one with Poulenc by the Corydon Singers with a different barcode, 5 028421 991931 on Discogs. Track list photo.
Iām guessing this listing from Allmusic is the one you have? Britten and Tippett. Barcode 8 713545 230215. Track list photo.
Looks like there are also some DVDs of the same name.
So I think you have a different CD that could go in as a new release. This style page seems to suggest grouping them even āwhere the tracklist isnāt identical, such as releases which have bonus tracks or even bonus discsā, so I guess theyād be the same release group?
Hopefully thatās helpful in sorting these out!

Iād select option 2 as more than 50% of your release differs.
Music can be sold and repackaged in many ways. Certainly never delete a Release based on a hunch it doesnāt exist.

Thatās really useful, seeing the āotherā CD, and helps me resolve this.
While I havenāt verified the barcode on mine yet (the CD is in the attic, buried), I plan to mark the existing release group as a compilation. From the later date (2006) Iām guessing that the record label issued it as a promo to boost both artists, taking existing material (including title and artwork!) from previous releases. That is supposition on my part, of course, and not necessary to justify my proposed action. I will adjust the release group to show both choirs and both conductors, trusting that this will cause the compilation to show under both artists works.
That leaves me clear to create a new release group for the Clare Choir version (release date 1996), which matches the DVD release shown at store | Clare College Choir (the CD appears to be no longer available).
In the light of your response, Iām no longer concerned by the existence of the two versions, but I do feel they should be treated as distinct release groups, because both choirs have solid bodies of work, and there is no evidence that they collaborated in creating a compilation.
Does this make sense?

And I think I may have found the album from which the Corydonās contributions may have come: https://www.discogs.com/release/8519214-Rutter-Bernstein-Poulenc-The-Wallace-Collection-Choir-Of-Clare-College-Cambridge-Timothy-Brown-3-Cor
Indeed, it appears to have the same tracks as the compilation, albeit in a different order.
Lacking a copy, I wonāt update the compilation release, but Iāll leave a note suggesting a link.
