Before I go through the other “Buddha-Bar” albums I have: what is actually correct? From a logical point of view I would’ve said that those albums are “Various Artists” - what is the reasoning behind this (applying “Various Artists” vs. “David Visan” in this specific case)?
Using anything else but Various Artists is clearly wrong. I add compiler or mixer association in that case. What is stated on cover shouldnt be taken literrary.
I just love those arbitrary style redefinitions of common knowledge. What could be very simple is made complicated and unintuitive (that is, use various artists if there is more than 1 artist on the release, as the name implies). I will follow the guidelines, but I have to complain a bit…
@FlavioB, please also add Dj mixer relationship. I always resign such releases to various artists locally as that is a way file name script determines where to put the files (I don’t want various artists to mingle with single artist releases). However, without relationship, info about mixer or compiler is lost so it can’t be used for audio selection.
To me “common knowledge” says if a DJ releases an album then I want to file it under that DJ along with their other mixes. The DJ has created the album and chose what to mix.
I also understand why you’d want to file it under VA if you have less interest in DJ mixes.
@IvanDobsky, that dj. is just another artist on VA .
But while you can argue this for dj mixing as songs can be substantially altered in the mix, its totally not for non-mixed compilations, for which we have the same guidelines. If so, then there shouldn’t be any “Various Artist” releases as there is always somebody who selects who should then be artist. To me, this is marketing leaking into semantics.
A DJ making a mix album is very different to a marketing team who makes up the NOW series. I can tell you are not a fan of DJs so this discussion will go no where. We can agree to disagree.
If I want a set by Goldie then I’ll go to my Goldie folder to find them. To me they are very different in style to a general “various artist” release. Which is why I am glad that the MB guidelines acknowledge the artist on the cover of a release. Style / Artist Credits - MusicBrainz
If I want a set by Goldie then I’ll go to my Goldie folder to find them.
This is personal preference which I do not share. I prefer to use tags as folders are not the main way one should use for selection (e.g. if X remixed Y, should you physically keep it in X or Y?, the correct answer is obviously both, which tags support and folders do not).
We shouldn’t decide this based on personal preferences. There are guidelines: Style / Release - MusicBrainz in general Style / Artist Credits - MusicBrainz for DJ mixes.
The latter goes even further and says a compiler credited anywhere on the release should be used as the release artist instead of using Various Artists.
If you think it should be done differently, we can discuss changing the guidelines, but as long as it isn’t changed, we should stick to them.
