Barcodes and stickers

I’ve got a copy of what I think is https://www.discogs.com/release/15946312-Puccini-Renata-Scotto-Placido-Domingo-Leo-Nucci-Tito-Gobbi-Ambrosian-Opera-Chorus-National-Philharmo but the top right of the back cover of the box has a sticker with a barcode (07464366692) that’s different from the barcode that Discogs shows on the box where the sticker is (5099707689026). The sticker also says “U.S.A. & CAN.” Also, the side of the box says “MK 76890” / “US&CAN MK 36669” which looks like catalog numbers that are subsequences of the different barcodes.

Between the barcodes and catalog numbers, I’m guessing this means that the same printed box is used to release in different countries, and the sticker is added by the original manufacturer or distributor as part of the official release in US and Canada?

So these should be two different releases with two different barcodes, right? Also, I’m guessing each release should have only one of the two catalog numbers based on the barcode?

On your Discogs link, it looks like the barcode is printed (5 099707 689026), not a a sticker.
So, is your sticker glued on the top of this printed original barcode, to cover it?

When I search your barcode on the internet, I can only find a Le villi library listing, but it’s blocked to me.

Maybe it’s just a library sticker, so it would not be worht mentioning in MB.

Those look like European (5099707689026) and North American (07464366692) barcodes, and “MK 36669” is the catalog number in North America.

Seems likely. It’s just one release with two catalog numbers, released in Europe/USA/Canada. I guess it should also have two barcodes, if that was possible.

From Discogs, the original LP is “76 890 (M 36 669)” on a European version, but only “M 36669” on the US release.

It’s on top of the same place on the box. I haven’t peeled it off to see what’s under it, but I’m guessing it’s the barcode from Discogs.

My barcode scanner app identifies the sticker as EAN 13, though I think it’s actually UPC and they’re just compatible. All the library barcodes that I’ve seen have used CODABAR. Also, the library barcodes often have the name of the library (or library network) on them, not the name of two countries.

My thoughts are similar to Jesus2099’s. Unless you can confirm that the sticker was not added by a third party, like a library or retailer, I would add it as a single release.

By the way, I found the MB Release Group for this release, in case you hadn’t.

Does your app show the check digit? The code you typed is only 11 digits. It’s common enough that a barcode doesn’t include the check digit, but I think most scanners will show it.

If that’s the case, then shouldn’t it be two releases because the sticker is a consistent difference between the releases in different places?

Isn’t the fact that the barcode includes one of the catalog numbers printed on the box a good indication that it wasn’t added by a third party?

Yup, I’d found that, but it doesn’t have this release yet. The discid is also attached to Release “Le Villi” by Giacomo Puccini; Leo Nucci, Renata Scotto, Plácido Domingo, Ambrosian Opera Chorus, National Philharmonic Orchestra, Lorin Maazel - MusicBrainz but that seems to part of a (weirdly entered to MBz) box set that my release isn’t part of.

Oh good catch. The EAN vs UPC thing was just because the app shows an additional leading 0, but the app also shows the missing check digit. The scanned barcode is 0074643666923, which has a few results on eBay. 074643666923 (without the leading 0 but with the check digit) has a few more results too.

It may be, but I don’t know enough about how these things are managed to make that assumption.
