Hi everybody,

I’ve been doing some clean-up of Antônio Carlos Jobim releases. Here are some notes about release Release “Wave” by Antônio Carlos Jobim - MusicBrainz that I made while I was trying to decide what to do with it:

This was added in a series of edits:

Edit #58984000 - Add release, associated with https://www.discogs.com/Antonio-Carlos-Jobim-Wave/release/3044240, an LP released in 1967.

Edit #58984002 - Associated a DiscID with the release

Checked Discogs, don’t see any CD releases with the same Catalogue number. Of course, all releases with that catalogue number are LPs.

It is clear that the editor was trying to add a release based on a CD in his possession but was inexperienced, so pointed to the original release date of the album as well as an incorrect Discogs entry. The release, as it exists in the DB now, is an amalgam of information from different actual releases.

Since it was added based on a physical CD, I believe the best way to turn this into a valid entry is to remove the LP-related information from the release and associate it with an actual CD release. However, the DiscID needs to match an actual CD release and the only match for the DiscID is this entry. Remove the DiscID and associate it was a random Discogs entry that doesn’t yet exist on MusicBrainz? This is not desirable.

I suppose another option is to simply leave the entry as is.

This is where I stopped and decided to consult with the community. What do you all think?

When chaos takes over a release it is best to use a sane head and split into two separate releases.

If this was me, I would leave the original as an LP. Then make a new one for the CD. Move the discID to that CD edition.

If you can make sense of which CD this is, great. Then give it cat numbers and a discogs link.

If you can’t work out what it is, then just leave it as a CD version without dates or details or barcode or cat number. Someone who owns the CD may appear later and then fix it.

It is also possible that the noob who added the discID was adding something they had ripped from a vinyl… even more reason to just separate it into a “CD” release with no other data.

If you do make it as a release with no details, then add an annotation to explain it was a lost DiscID looking for a home.

The key point is I would preserve the original intention of the original editor that this release is an LP.
