I just spent a while trying to decide if in the title for: Release group “Got it?” by GOT7 - MusicBrainz the “it” should actually be capitalized or not, as spotify, apple music, bugs! music, discogs, etc. have it capitalized, but melon, MB, and namuwiki do not. Normally I’d just go with what’s on the physical album, but this is a weird case where the album doesn’t even have it’s own title on it, only the artist name and track titles. I couldn’t find an artist’s page on the website for their current agency, so I finally used the way back machine to check the original entertainment company’s website and found the title is indeed “Got it?”.
Is this something that’s worth adding an annotation for (including a link to the way back machine page), or is there a better way to show proof to save time for future users who also want to know for sure what it should be?
Even if the company that made it has it as “Got it?” on their website? Is this kind of stylistic choice only kept with artist names/track titles and not release titles? GOT7 (Shows up under Album Info)
Currently there is no style guideline for Korean, so I think it’s technically correct to follow the English since that’s the locale for the album title.
But I personally agree with your observation that Korean artists tend to use English (or other scripts) for stylistic effect, so it seems sensible to me to keep capitalization as it appears on official releases. Japanese artists have a tendency to choose capitalization and punctuation for aesthetic reasons, and to be very consistent regarding case over all releases. For this reason, words in the Latin script on a Japanese release should be in the same case as on the album art if other available sources, such as official discography or record label pages, are consistent, not normalized according to English or other capitalization standards. This applies even if the whole title is in English or another non-Japanese language, as long as it is consistently written in the non-standard way.
I know other Korean/K-pop editors have favored the Japanese style guidelines for English capitalization on Korean releases, so I also see no issue with just leaving it as Got it?
Yea I’d also agree with that sentiment about favoring Japanese style.
But at the same time the Japanese guideline isn’t strictly followed either. For example, Japanese preserves the displayed capitalization for ETIs (hence “Instrumental” would remain as-is), but we still normalize it to “instrumental” for Korean
I guess these are for the future Korean style guideline to settle. But in the absence of it, some inconsistent annotation is probably inevitable.
