All Saints "Lady Marmelade" album version and single remix

All Saints - Lady Marmelade, there are 2 versions:

  • the 1997 album version (3:53)
  • the 1998 remix released as the single (4:04)

However, the recordings are a complete mess, see for example Recording “Lady Marmalade” by All Saints - MusicBrainz , this clearly has the 1997 and 1998 versions completely mixed up.

How do I go about splitting these up properly? Even if I reassign the tracks, the AcoustIDs will remain permanently wrong I guess? I made the mistake of putting a wrong disambiguation edit, just submitted a correction to that to match the album credits - but the ISRCs are mixed up as well, etc. What version should I designate as the 1998 remix? This one?

Not unusual to see that. Too many merges happen on just lengths and assuming AcoustIDs are perfect.

Personally when I do a split like this I see if I can find targets with the most “correct” AcoustIDs and recordings to keep as the “masters” and work around that.

If you have some copies yourself you can grab AcoustIDs for, put them in an annotation at the top of the Recording. And maybe a hint for someone as to how to tell the difference.

Example of adding AcoustID links in annotation: https://musicbrainz.org/recording/1cb233e4-bd40-488e-b20b-1ff88cb9d27e

Once you select your “master” recordings you can unlink the wrong AcoustIDs from them. I’d only unlink those you know are on the “other” recording.

Sometimes if you have a really huge mess of a heap it is easier to diambig this as (version unknown) and just move all the “known” versions out to two fresh masters…

(I have AE’d that disambig error for you)

It is usually very long to fix these.
Please research edit histories and document your fixes in edit notes.

I’m currently doing this kind of recording split fix, too. :sob:
