A More complete JellyFin MB Plug-in

I’ve been using JellyFin for 13 months now (before which I used Serviio for 10+ years) and have gotten tired of how limited the built-in MB plug-in in JF is with pulling data from MB. Therefore I decided to make a plugin for my own personal use that retrieves genres, tags, better artist support and more. It’s still in a beta state, but once I get it to a stable state, would anyone be interested in having the link to the manifest to download the plugin for their own JF servers?

I’m sure a lot of Jellyfin users will be interested! Once it’s done please share the plugin and we can share it on the MB socials :flexed_biceps:

P.S. Isn’t Jellyfin open-source? They may be interested in integrating it as well.

I would likely be interested~

I’ll also second looking into adding these features to the main MusicBrainz plugin, as they would quite likely welcome these improvements~

one question, do you expect to just deal with Music, or will you include Music Videos and/or Audiobooks too? there seems to be quite a bit of interest in the former at least: add MusicBrainz as a Music Video metadata provider · Jellyfin Feature Requests

I am very glad that someone is making a plugin for music.

Just give me the link and I’ll start testing your plugin in a wide variety of use cases. I love plugins for jf.

I was currently only looking at adding metadata for artist, album and track for normal music. I’d be willing to try the other entities then, but not till I’m satisfied with the completeness and stability of the initial 3 entity types. I haven’t directly contributed to any large OSS like JF before, but I’d be willing to incorporate my code into the JF repos, if their devs welcome it.

Definitely interested as well! I mostly manage my music with beets, but having genres directly accessible in Jellyfin without having to update the files all the time would be very nice for me.

ooh, another question… would you also be interested in supporting submitting data from Jellyfin to MusicBrainz? I don’t know that I’d use it all that often personally, since I usually edit metadata in MusicBee, but that could be quite useful for some, I’m sure~

ah, I should have been more clear, lol

I was talking about submitting folksonomy and genre tags to MusicBrainz

That would be a while down the road, I’m not opposed to posting tags back to MB, but it’s not the current goal of the plugin (3 main entity types → music videos/audio books->other things like posting tags back to MB).

As I’m nearing satisfaction of the 3 initial entities (I still need to add the property page for the plugin to control what and how data from MB is pulled to JF), I’m looking at the next steps. I have music videos in my collection to test on, but I don’t have any audio books. Therefore, would anyone know of any free public domain audio books that are in MB that I can test metadata pulling for audio books on?
