Why is this happening? [standalone recordings] & add. missing ref. points for the MusicBrainz database

MusicBrain Picard Version 2.12.3
Mac OS 15.6 (24G84)
Plugins enabled:
The AudioDB cover art
Standardise Performers
Standardise Feat.
Feat. Artists in Titles
Deezer cover art
Amazon cover art

I customized my tags by eliminating:

  1. MusicBrainz Release Artist Id
    &
  2. MusicBrainz Release Id

because I did not find a release specific enough to my personal release.
In other words, I eliminated the 2 most narrow MusicBrainz ID’s.

Upon reloading the tagged files into Picard I found suggested NEW (SUGGESTED) VALUES of: (see pic 1)

EDIT: Due to something corrupting my uploads here I uploaded pic 1 here:

  1. [standalone recordings] recommended at the album.
  2. Track numbers, Date, Album Artist, Album Artist Sort Order, Disc Number, Total Discs, Barcode, ISRC, Meida, Musicbrainz Release Group Id, MusicBrainz Track Id, Record Label, Release Status, Release Type, Script, Total Tracks … all suggested as nothing, blank..

even though tags still existed for all of the above except for

  1. MusicBrainz Release Artist Id
  2. MusicBrainz Release Id
both of which I acknowledge I removed to make my release more truthful to what currently existed in the database.

I understand this is a SUGGESTED VALUE.
I am wondering why when I eliminate :

  1. MusicBrainz Release Artist Id
    &
  2. MusicBrainz Release Id
    does it lead to this?

My secondary concern is:

If in the future I will be using a player that references the MusicBrainz database, How do i know my music will show up the way it is tagged if so much appears missing to musicbrainz picard when it is reloaded ? After all it CAN NOT reference ANY album, Track numbers, Date, Album Artist, Album Artist Sort Order, Disc Number, Total Discs, Barcode, ISRC, Meida, Musicbrainz Release Group Id, MusicBrainz Track Id, Record Label, Release Status, Release Type, Script, Total Tracks … etc… ?

Can someone help me with what is going on?

Thank you so much.

I’ve put a lot of time into this, and I don’t want to be caught off guard when I finally load all my music into a player that references the musicbrainz database.

For what it is worth, MediaInfo does not show:
MusicBrainz_ArtistID
MusicBrainz_TrackID
MusicBrainz_RecordingID
Album Artist

But this may be due to a limitation of MediaInfo and have nothing to do with my current issue.

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

EDIT: I have re-uploaded the screen shots, but on my end they still appear corrupted.

Here are the links to the images on a pastebin:

  1. IMAGE 1
  2. IMAGE 2

When you load files into Picard that have already been tagged with release and recording MBIDs it automatically attempts to load the corresponding data on the right and match the file to it. This way you only need to match a file once and can easily retag it.

As you removed the release MBID Picard loads only the recording. And a recording does not have an album name, album artist, barcode etc.

You have some options:

  1. Leave the release MBID in the files (this is what I would recommend)
  2. or disable the automatic lookup of existing MBIDs by ticking the checkbox “Ignore MBIDs when loading new files” in Options > General. The files stay on the left then. You can still edit tags, save them with proper file naming etc. But they will not get data loaded from MB unless you manually match them again.
  3. Also remove the recording MBID from the files. The result when loading the file into Picard again will be similar to option 2, but with the extra downside that the recording MBID is also not available for other uses (such as scrobbling).

Screen shots seem to be corrupted.

Also, we tend to need fine details.

What are the releases and tracks that the files are matched to?

What exactly do you delete from the existing tags and save?

What exactly are the consequent results?

(I appreciate that the screen shots may have shown that if they were visible.)

What is the player you wish to use, and how exactly does it look up from MB?

Sorry about the confusion and corrupted images. I do thank you for your patience and assistance.

I have uploaded the images to a pastebin. Here are the links (also in original post, but my post is waiting for approval by admin).

My desired player will most likely be a Navidrome client, like Supersonic.

As I have not setup the Navidrome client, I can not answer how it looks up from MB, but I will look into that. That is an excellent point and I can see how it would greatly affect things.

I have reuploaded the images, but they still appear corrupted.

I am going to post the images to a pastebin and share the link.

Not sure what is going on here.

Thanks for your help.

thank you for your reply.

I recently uploaded the images that were not showing in my original post to a pastebin, would you mind taking a look and seeing if that happens to change your suggestions?

The images may not change anything (and may not be necessary) because as I read your comments I see how you are explaining the nature of how picard is working, which is something I did not fully understand, and now that I do, I may be able to come to a solution.

My issue with leaving the MusicBrainz Release Artist Id & MusicBrainz Release Id (expecially the Release Id) is that by leaving an incorrect Id in the tags, won’t my release be misrepresented?

I do not fully comprehend how important that may or may NOT be. I try to be as accurate as possible with my tagging.

If my tags are pointing to an incorrect release Id, then wouldn’t I have issues later on when playing a track and the references to the database will point to an incorrect release, therefore providing incorrect information?

Maybe having an incorrect Release Id is better than none at all and maybe it will actually create less problems down the road.

Since I have not created my Navidrome server yet, I do not understand the real life repercussions of leaving out or misrepresenting certain musicbrainz tags.

Do you have any experience on how Navidrome would handle this situation? It may depend on the specific client as another user has pointed out. In that case I was attracted to Supersonic for reasons I can not recall at the moment.

Thank you again.

It is a bit of work, but if you want very specific/granular data you will want to add your release to the database.

There are instructions (including a video) here: How to Add a Release - MusicBrainz

The first time can be a headache but it gets fast and easy with time, I promise

No need to use pastebin. This forum allows you to just screen shots direct paste into the post.

To keep your life simple, keep the MBIDs in place in the tags. They don’t take up much space, but make working with Picard and many media players a lot easier in the longer run. It would likely avoid much of the headache you are having here.

I would not be surprised if you’ll find out your media player can make use of these MBIDs. Just see them as consistent ways of naming within the database. For example, it means that an artist can have variations of a name, but always be seen as the same artist by a database. Nothing more annoying that seeing “Prodigy” and “The Prodigy” and “Proidgy, The” split into three separate artists. An Artist MBID allows a database media player to keep things together.

Majority of your releases will be fine. Don’t delete the data just because you may have one or two releases that may need manual tweaking.

to ADMIN:

Could the screen shots not showing up have something to do with my “new” status?

All my responses and posts have to be reviewed. Can this be fixed on your end, or do i need to use a pastebin for the images? Thank you.

It should not be connected, I think I’ve seen other posts from people with the same status that have pictures and they work. I have no idea what might be causing this, honestly.

Not much, the images show what I expected to.see

Just maybe consider disabling the “Clear existing tags” option. The entries shown in red will be deleted when saving. That’s because the tags exist in the files, but there is no data for loaded from MB (for a standalone-recording). Usually Picard would just leave the tags alone when saving, but by enabling “Clear existing tags” you force it to remove them.

It depends. After all it is your files, and it depends on whether you find the differences significant enough that you would care. I see for example you have left the barcode in the tags, so I assume the barcode is the same.

What are the actual differences? E.g. different artwork?

If you really care the best solution is to add your release with the different details to MB and tag your files against that.
