"Use genres from MusicBrainz" setting not populating track genre tag

I’m trying to understand why are the genres in the viewing pane different than the genres listed for each track in the tag at the bottom. How would I get the genre tag that is in the viewing pane to appear where the track tag is at the bottom?

I have identified that the genre tags appearing in the viewing pane are populated by the setting “use genres from MusicBraniz”. If this setting is enabled, the viewing pane genres differ from the genre tags at the bottom. If I uncheck “use genres from MusicBrainz”, then they are the same.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

At first look, this sounds like a bug to me. But I haven’t investigated.

That’s what I was thinking too, but I didn’t want to go through the trouble of a uninstall/reinstall if I was overlooking or not understanding something.

I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling. Now the genre tags match. Thanks.

The genre displayed isn’t from MusicBrainz database, so it is likely stored in your files metadata.
None of the releases of Cry by Cigarettes After Sex have genres set (though release group and artist have).

Check Genres — MusicBrainz Picard v2.13.3 documentation and enable Fall back on album’s artists genres if no genres are found for the release or release group option and refresh the release to see if it changes something. My guess is that you don’t have it checked so it does the right thing (as none of the releases have genres set atm).

I think the question is why is “dream pop” displayed (in the screenshot, green text), when both “original value” and “new value” have the tag “Alternative en indie” instead.

Edit: If a reinstall fixed it I guess it’s not so important

This is strictly a guess, but perhaps the displayed columns in the right-hand pane are not being updated when the items in the metadata table are updated.

I came across a similar issue and confirmed that the Fall back on album’s artists genres if no genres are found for the release group is enabled.

In this scenario, the track Now and Then by Kenny Loggins is populating the genres Hip Hop and West Coast Hip Hop.

When I select look up in browser and navigate to tags, I can see Hip Hop and West Coast Hip Hop as genres for this track.

I’m just trying to understand where are these genres coming from and how to get better control over them.
