I might be regretting starting this… slightly amused at how so far it seems to be a handful of ‘famous’ artists, and then the members of a dozen large orchestras and choirs.
Think we need an FAQ yet for last.fm users not to mess with the database and configure their player, tagger, etc. to change what’s stored and sent from their files?
Better yet, recommend using something better than last.fm
Would be great. I’m sending a message to explain to them.
Although it would also be great to have a LB to LastFM exporter that remap titles “incorrectly” for those that like having LastFM, but can’t make it work because MB Style said no
I use both last.fm and ListenBrainz myself. I used to import but now submit directly to both. In my bio on last.fm I recommend people try using ListenBrainz as well
Picard has this feature as a plugin I believe. Featured artists in titles rather than artist field. A LB to Last.fm scrobbler would be pretty cool. GSoC project idea?
Think we also need something that monitors anyone who mentions last.fm in a comment and a bot auto-applies 17 no votes… seems to be a never ending stream of this stuff… been going on for years. Last.FM isn’t really going to care.
I added a similar festival that “took place” during COVID. Took me a ludicrous amount of time, because of course I can’t just create new artists without researching them, maybe adding a release, ahhhhh…
Note: Although it “didn’t take place”, you could still buy tickets, and afaik they sold a lot
Was thinking about making it an Alistral feature but yeah >.>
Could run on a cron easily.
Although I do need to create a LastFM account. As much as I love LB, I need to spread the word of our lord and saviour Caster- I mean, advertise unknown artists somewhere else too
doing old 90s rave festivals makes your head spin… who the hell is “Oblivion” is that a DJ, and MC, an act?
Good grief!
I very much enjoyed this disambiguation: (Swiss rock band in which members are dressed up as sex organs)
It’s really k-mania everywhere.
I see more and more shops selling k-bab sandwiches, also!
Personally, I’m a big fan of k-value
Ach, I didn’t get k-value…
But I love figures k-ting!!
So some of you may know that I am a big fan of physical media, and I like to get a good bargain. That means I often scour places like charity shops (thrift stores) or car boot sales (flea markets) to add to my collection and even (if the price is right) find stuff for the project.
Today I went to a car boot (as it was my day off work) and had a great time finding some nice Jazz CD’s, some truly wonderful looking pan pipe albums (@aerozol will be so proud) and a couple of music/entertainment magazines; but there was one encounter that I just want to rant about.
This isn’t anything that uncommon, and I’m pretty mature to the secondhand market and know there are plenty of shysters about (i.e. someone who is just full of crap) on both sides of the “table”. This time it was the seller. Typical kind of careless clearance seller, CD’s are in a loose “pile” not organized or anything. I begin having a bit of a rummage, as sometimes these piles can hold gold inside them. While I’m doing this, this guy is absolutely chewing this guys ear off about a book he’s looking at telling him that someone online wants “over £100” online and that he would do him a favour and sell it for £40; now I know nothing about book value but the alarm bells started ringing in my head that he’s going to be difficult. People who quote they’ve seen things listed for some ludicrous amount online often fail to understand that data isn’t from actual “sales”, anyone can list something for ££££’s yet other listings are simply selling for £’s.
Anyway, his pile wasn’t that great (a few of the cases were actually empty which indicates the guy isn’t a true collector) but there was a copy of Ry Cooder’s Chicken Skin Music which isn’t overly common to come across; so I asked how much the CD’s in general were - expecting the standard retort of £1 each or less, and maybe a bit more for any boxsets. The guy then (finally) leaves the book buyer alone and now directs his verbal torrent of poo-poo at me “oh well CD’s are £2 but some are more, like this one would be like £4 and then the boxsets even more, some of these CD’s are worth £40”. I couldn’t even get a word in edge ways while he then proceeded with the same story about seeing some of these CD’s (the rest were very common pop/rock titles) going for insane amounts and then started trying to stuff my hands with random CD’s that I had no interest in. I just kept putting them back into the pile, and eventually after lasting all of about 2 minutes in this fecal verbal whirlpool I put down the Ry Cooder CD (which I probably would have spent £2 on if that was the actual price) and began to walk away, all while he was then shouting after me asking me to buy some random Stranglers CD which was apparently “sealed”.
I wonder if that other guy bought that book afterall?
I thought you were going to have one of those sellers who starts checking Discogs for “max prices” when you handed the CDs over to buy.
Was so much easier when all one had for pricing was a dog eared copy of Record Collector.
I feel your pain. Where I live there are almost no places where old music is sold, most makes its way to the used music stores. I do a tremendous amount of value buying of eBay (or I used to) and have come across some impossible finds. All that has changed in the last 6 months or so and the prices have gotten ridiculous. I never pay any attention to the “rare” comment, for some reason everything is rare. One of my favorite (now past) sellers, the different Goodwill stores, all use a global database “now” to price their CDs so that they do not compete against each other. Hey its their store and its up to me to buy or not buy. The prices are “hopeful” at best so I stopped buying from them, I have seen the CD’s sit there for a year. I do not understand the commonly available “rare” CD that is advertised at hundreds of dollars (or best offer). In any case I am close to closing down my eBay account because there is a push to way overprice CDs, and my old eyes can spend only so much time on the screen now.
One last thing to say. A year and half ago I was trolling eBay in the late hours and accidentally came across a listing I was positive was a spoof, fake, or who knows what. Its was CD of a 1977 LP that was never issued on CD, and I was looking for the LP to digitize. At first I decided someone had digitized the LP and it had found its way onto eBay by a unscrupulous seller or someone that had just found it somewhere. I left it alone but something was bugging me and the end price to me was just under $8. The next day I looked up the seller location and found they were about 15 miles away from the original recording studio. I got to thinking that maybe there was bankruptcy, close out, maybe something stored away that got lost and it was only $8 to keep me from thinking about it as a I slept so I bought it. It was a CDR so I assumed I had been it was a fake but went ahead and ripped it, I never looked at the artwork since it was a very bad rendering of the original album with the copyright stuff blackened out. I must have listened to it 4-5 times before I was forced to pick up the CD case to look for liner notes (if any). The clarity was amazing, this was no needle drop, I suspect it was from the original masters or copies of the masters. The simple liner notes say:
Moonshine Mountain, was originally recorded in 1977.
I think you will be amazed at the quality of this recording.
It was my pleasure to be a member of The Outdoor Plumbing Co. at the time this was recorded.
Now nearly 25 years later I have had the opportunity to re-master the album digitally.
I know you will enjoy it. It was a labor of love.
Digitally remastered at:
Full Gallup
2338 Hutchinson Br. Rd.
Kenova, WV 25530
Worth the $8.
That is amazing! As its a CD-R definitely make sure you’ve got a good FLAC rip of the audio as CD-R’s have a habit of going bad after a while
A VERY interesting thread on Copyright, Reuse, Open Access and Culture (on Bluesky)
In case (like me) you’re wondering, the 18 hour sounscape by Laurence Lessig is already on MB Release “Free Culture” by Lawrence Lessig - MusicBrainz
It also inspired me to check out Negativland - MusicBrainz great name and they sound like top-notch piss-takers.
