Oh sorry, I didn’t see your last paragraph!
Yes, why not, good idea!
But not 100, maybe 10?
Or maybe display vote count, like @UltimateRiff said.
I saw this video and though it might be relevant for this discussion. It doesn’t talk about music rating but i think many of the points are still relevant.
Very fun and accurate, but if anyone’s wondering the video is not about 5 star vs 10 star ratings, or how to implement them, it is commentary on why we shouldn’t let ratings guide our lives ![]()
On the subject of accidental ratings - does anyone know if it is possible to remove a rating? I found out I had weirdly rated some recordings… at least one is presumably a mistake…
EDIT - THE ANSWER IS HERE
0- unrated (currently 4.7% of tracks)
1- unlistenable (quality of recording, or actual music) and will be deleted from my library (currently 0.01% of tracks)
2- not really my thing (currently 8.7% of tracks) -potentially deletable based on overall quality of the album*
3-ok, good to hear in a shuffle, but also up for a review change to a ‘2’ or a ‘4’ (currently 61.3% of tracks)
4-great track (currently 20.6% of tracks)
5-absolutely marvellous (currently 4.7% of tracks)
(I did once run a 6-star playlist based on those tracks that actually gave me goosebumps or perhaps brought a tear to my eye)
*nb I use a double rating/synching system, combining track and album rating. I’ll not sync a 2-star track to my player unless it fills a gap in a 4 or 5-star album to maintain the flow, or where it is a short ‘interlude’, or linking track, on a 3, 4 or 5-star album. They’d be omitted from shuffles, and count for 0.8% of total tracks. All 2-star tracks on 2-star albums will be deleted from the library (the other 2-star ‘non-interlude’ tracks on a 3-star album are held for re-rating and possible deletion).
Footnote: I would love to have a system that did include 6-stars, so that I could release the 1-star from its role as a waste bin, and shift 2-stars to 1-star, and then give me the opportunity to split the 3-stars into two groups - the bell curve of my distribution is a little too pronounced(!), but music should be listened to, and maybe not continuously appraised ![]()
I do almost the same thing but I put them on critiquebrainz
- 1 “You call this music?”
- 2 “Please don’t come near me”
- 3 “I’d listen if i get it in a mix, but don’t come here often”
- 4 “I listen to it regularly”
- 5 “I’d listen on repeat until I’m sick of it, but I don’t want to be sick of it, so I restrain myself”
Still would love rating sync between MB and CB… An remove the character limit on reviews for LB
The the best rating system (IMO) has only 1+3 states: a neutral, unrated default, and the three options “thumbs up = like”, “thumbs down = dislike”, “heart = love”
