Style guide for track numbers?

I have found this unofficial style guide: http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/User:Hawke/Proposal/Track_numbering

Could please someone tell me, if a valid track number also can be a roman numeral?

I don’t see why not. It is on the scans as Roman numerals. I wouldn’t use them if they weren’t though.

It’s hardly the most unusual kind of track numbering.

I don’t see why not either.

Note: you shouldn’t use the unicode roman numeral table. Its use is discouraged in the unicode spec.

How do you translate the Roman numeral IV (4) to the ID3tag “track number”?
The official description says:

TRCK: The ‘Track number/Position in set’ frame is a numeric
string containing the order number of the audio-file on its original
recording. This may be extended with a “/” character and a numeric
string containing the total numer of tracks/elements on the original
recording. E.g. “4/9”.

Should this be 4/9 for the asked example?
And what about @mfmeulenbelt’s example with the W O R L D P E A C E !?

We have two different concepts (number and position or something like that). Position is always 1-n and is what Picard uses by default for track numbering IIRC.
